The Spring League: Sea Lions 2021 Spring Roster Breakdown

The Spring League continued to release the full rosters for their teams on Wednesday, beginning with the newly added Sea Lions. Their week 1 matchup will be versus the Blues in Houston, Texas, at Rice Stadium on Friday, May 7, at 9:30 pm ET/6:30 pm PT and will be shown on FS1.

Head Coach: Larry Kirksey

Some XFL fans may recognize Larry Kirksey from his time as the wide receivers coach for the Seattle Dragons, but aside from his time in the XFL, he’s held various coaching positions throughout the football world. Before his time with the Dragons, Kirksey held coaching positions on NFL teams, including wide receiver coach for the Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Lions, and even won a Superbowl with the San Francisco 49ers.

He’s also spent time as an assistant head coach at Texas A&M, and was a running back coach at Alabama, Pitt, and Florida. Kirksey’s only other head coaching opportunity was a short stint with Kentucky State in 1983, where he went 2-7-2 before taking the job with the Gators.

Quarterbacks

Nick Fitzgerald – (Mississippi State) – 6’5″/227lbs

Fitzgerald should come as another familiar face to XFL fans, having played on the St. Louis Battlehawks. Although he never saw playing time as the starting quarterback due to Jordan Ta’amu starting all 5 games, he did run the ball 2 times for 10 yards. He became more well known to fans during the BudLight Setlzer celebrations with now Washington Football Team quarterback Taylor Heinicke.

Aside from Fitzgerald’s time as a Battlehawk, he is one of the most decorated players in Mississippi State history, earning the 2018 SEC Offensive Player of the Week (vs. Auburn, vs. Texas A&M), 2018 Davey O’Brien Great 8 QB List (vs. Auburn), 2018 Team Captain, 2018 SEC Academic Honor Roll, 2017 Maxwell Award Semifinalist, 2017 Davey O’Brien Award Semifinalist, 2017 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Finalist, 2017 Maxwell Award National Player of the Week (vs. LSU), 2017 Davey O’Brien Award QB of the Week (vs. LSU), 2017 Manning Award Star of the Week (vs. LSU), 2017 SEC Offensive Player of the Week (vs. LSU, at Texas A&M), 2017 SEC Academic Honor Roll, 2016 St. Petersburg Bowl MVP, 2016 Third-Team All-SEC (Phil Steele), 2016 SEC Offensive Player of the Week (vs. Texas A&M, at Ole Miss), 2016 Davey O’Brien Great 8 QB List (vs. Texas A&M, at Ole Miss), 2016 Manning Award Star of the Week (vs. Texas A&M, at Ole Miss), 2016 SEC Academic Honor Roll, and 2015 SEC Academic Honor Roll.

He made a name for himself as a dual-threat player and took over, for now, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott. Fitzgerald would be a 3-year starter and ended his college career with 511 completions for 6207 yards, 55 touchdowns, and 30 interceptions through the air while rushing 601 times for 3,607 yards and 46 touchdowns.

He would sign as an undrafted free agent to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following the 2019 NFL Draft and spent most of his time on the practice squad before getting released only a few months later in October.

DeAndre Johnson – (Texas Southern) – 6’2”/205lbs

Johnson was originally intended to replace Jameis Winston as Florida States quarterback of the future, but an off-field incident ended with his dismissal from the team prior to his freshman season. In 2016, he would play JUCO level football at East Mississippi Community College, which during his time there happened to be featured on the Netflix series “Last Chance U.”

He finished the season with a 60.6 percent completion percentage, tallying 2,645 yards, and 26 scores in 11 games played. EMCC won the MACJC Championship along with the Mississippi State Bowl State Championship. His play, along with the show’s spotlight, allowed him to transfer to Florida Atlantic.

He would spend his first season with Florida Atlantic redshirted, later deciding during his Junior season he wanted to transfer again after not finding much success with the new program. Johnson would spend his final season in 2019 with the Texas Southern Tigers, where he would pass for 2,093 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions with a 60% completion percentage. He would also rush the ball 110 times for 180 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Running Backs

Matt Jones – (Florida) – 6’2”/227lbs

Matt Jones is a name that should be familiar to more than just XFL fans. Jones played well in his time as a Florida Gator, rushing for 1,431 yards and 11 touchdowns and caught 19 receptions for 100 yards and 1 touchdown all in 28 games. He would enter the NFL draft following his junior season and would be selected with the 95th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft by the Washington Football Team (Then Washington Redskins), signing a 4 year deal with the team. Jones began the 2015 season as the solidified starting back, but following a knee injury in late 2016, he would lose his playing time to rookie Robert Kelly and Chris Thompson.

On September 2, 2017, Jones was released by Washington and would join the Indianapolis Colt the following offseason, spending most of the year on their practice squad. He would have a short stint with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2018 and later declared for the XFL’s Draft in October 2019. Jones was selected by the St. Louis Battlehawks in the draft and would go on to be named to the mid-season All-XFL team after rushing for 314 yards and a touchdown, along with 25 receiving yards and a touchdown in the 5 games before the league suspended operations.

Adam Choice – (Clemson) – 5’9”/188lbs

As a true freshman at Clemson in 2014, Choice found playing time in 6 games before having a season-ending ACL tear. Redshirt Freshman and now San Francisco 49ers running back Wayne Gallman would take his starting role for the remainder of the season. Choice was redshirted the following year, and from 2016 to 2018, served as a reserve running back. He would complete his career with 1,250 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns on 239 carries, along with 22 receptions for 179 yards in 561 snaps over 45 games. Near the end of his collegiate career, Choice split carries with Tavien Feaster, and Travis Etienne. Although he was not the feature back, Choice’s role as a trusted backup should not be underestimated. Etienne would serve as the starter but only ever eclipsed 20 carries per game twice. Over the last 3 seasons, Clemson has run an average of roughly 34 run plays per game, leaving plenty of touches for the reserve backs like Choice.

LaDarius Galloway – (Tennessee – Martin) – 5’10″/205lbs

Galloway played his 2017 and 2018 seasons for the University of Tennessee at Martin and was named second-team Ohio Valley Conference All-Star in 2017. He would play in the Division 2 Senior Bowl at Myrtle Beach and gained recognition from scouts by making 8 catches for 100 yards and a touchdown. Tight Ends

Jevoni Robinson – (NC State/Barry) – 6’8″/240lbs

Robinson is one of the more unique players on the list for the sole reason that he did not play football at all in college. The Jamaica native grew up playing cricket, rugby, soccer and was a part of the track and field team, but didn’t even know the rules of football until he moved to the US for his Junior year of high school. He played wide receiver while in high school but decided to play basketball in college. Following his time at college and despite not playing football, he managed to sign a futures/reserves contract with the Houston Texans but was cut in September of 2018. He later spent time with the AAF San Antonio Commanders and was featured in an XFL showcase in 2019. With many of the NFL’s top tight ends having played basketball in high school and/or college, Robinson looks to make the transition as well.

Caleb Repp – (Utah State) – 6’5″/230lbs
