Roster Move: Tampa Bay Vipers Waive CB Waters

In a move posted to the XFL Transaction page today the Tampa Bay Vipers have waived cornerback Herb Waters. This comes amid a flurry of roster moves from late last week. According to the league’s transaction page, the Vipers did add linebacker Anthony Stubbs as an “active list addition” but the team’s official roster does not reflect any of the moves made in the last five days.

In full transparency, the flow of information from organizational moves to the league’s website has been less than stellar as we creep towards week one of the season. The Vipers suffered multiple injuries during their first week of practice in Tampa, resulting in three players moving to the injured reserve (Antonio Callaway, Ike Spearman and Andrew Tiller).

For Waters, his status with the Vipers was up in the air since the end of training camp. For a team that kept more defensive backs than any other position on the roster, it was almost expected that the group would be the first place Vipers head coach and general manager Marc Trestman was making a cut from.

Pending his official addition to the teams active 52-man roster, Stubbs was with the team throughout training camp before being cut at the end of training camp. With the official roster announcement, the Vipers only kept four linebackers on their roster which is second fewest in the XFL to the St. Louis Battlehawks (3). Now with the readdition of Stubbs, the team adds depth to the position, in a player who can play both inside and out at linebacker.

Stubbs attended Prairie View A&M University and lead the team in tackles his senior season with 78, he added 4.5 sacks, one interception and two pass defended.

It came as a massive surprise to the Millville, New Jersey native when the Cleveland Browns approached him and offered a contract after going undrafted in 2019.

Tampa Bay opens the 2020 season this upcoming Sunday (Feb. 9) on the road against the New York Guardians. Stay tuned to XFL News Hub for the latest.
