The XFL News Hub would like to congratulate former St. Louis Battlehawks Quarterback Jordan Ta’amu who was signed to the Carolina Panthers practice squad.
Ta’amu, who is already on his 5th NFL team came to prominence in the XFL by throwing for over 1,000 yards and five touchdowns in five games during a COVID shortened 2020 season. Ta’amu was also able to lead the Battlehawks to a 3-2 record and in prime position for a playoff run as well.
This isn’t the first time Ta’amu has been called upon on short notice to replace a former spring league QB. During the Washington Football Team’s COVID outbreak, Ta’amu was signed to the practice squad due to his former backup Taylor Heinicke testing positive for COVID-19.
Now that former Houston Roughneck QB PJ Walker has also been placed on the COVID-19 reserve list, Ta’amu has been called on again to replace his former XFL colleague.
Ta’amu, is similar to another quarterback we spotlighted earlier: Danny Etling. Ta’amu since being undrafted in 2019 out of Ole Miss, has garnered professional interest since coming out of school.
After being cut by the Texans in 2019, Ta’amu joined the Battlehawks and performed admirably. He then made his way to the Chiefs in 2020 joining their practice squad and then being cut in October of 2020. Ta’amu then finished the 2020 season with the Detroit Lions on their practice squad. In 2021, Ta’amu once again spent time with Detroit and KC, and most recently with the Washington Football Team.
If history repeats itself Ta’amu will most likely be released/waived when Walker is activated from the COVID reserve list and will be unemployed again. Hopefully Ta’amu can utilize another opportunity in a spring football league like the USFL to maximize his potential and showcase his skills.
Either way, Ta’amu will be a great option for the USFL or XFL. As a young QB who continues to find his way on and off NFL practice squads, it seems that a return to the spring league would not only be advantageous for Ta’amu but for both upcoming leagues as well.
