Tommy Auger has had one of the most interesting careers of any player I have covered so far. This young man graduated college following a bitter last second defeat in the bowl game, a two sport athlete. However, his first year immediately out of college he would spend his time doing taxes?
Trading in Formal Wear for Football
That’s right. Auger had jumped straight into the working world. His sports dreams locked up in the back of his mind. However that fateful 2019 year is when COVID sent the working world home for quarantine. Being cooped up in one location like that can do strange things to a man, but for Tommy it had him reliving his football memories and slowly growing the desire to play again.
Cineplexx Blue Devils
By 2020 his mind was made up, and the former Saint John’s University two sport athlete started putting out feelers. Several teams came back with interest, but Auger leaned on first hand experience from a former teammate. This teammate had played in the AFL, and helped Auger make the decision to sign with the Cineplexx Blue Devils of the Austrian Football League for the 2021 season.
Auger went on to put up numbers that dwarfed his college statistics. The former wide receiver caught 38 passes for 654 yards and 8 touchdowns. He also showcased his run after the catch abilities, on his way to those 8 touchdowns.
2022 Season
Auger would return to the US for the 2022 season. This time he signed a contract with the USFL, to be a part of their draft pool. He ultimately went unselected, this didn’t stop him though. He simply looked to the next opportunity.
That next opportunity came in the form of an open work out in California with the Fan Controlled Football League. Tapping another connection with former Wild Aces champion QB Jackson Erdman, saying nothing but good things about the league. With the glowing review, Auger was pumped to do damage in this revolutionary league, but first he had to get signed.
When attending the try-out, Auger impressed with his athleticism, and was able to ink a deal with the FCF. He would find himself grouped with the offensive line group known as The Forcefield. Due to the weekly drafts, and the expectation that each line group play two games a day, Tommy played for multiple teams.
Season 2.0
When asked which teams he preferred he was quick to point to the Bored Ape Football Club, and the Knights of Degen. He found himself as a member of the Bored Ape Football Club heading into Championship weekend.
Just days before the game, Tommy would find out he had achieved one of his biggest goals. He was named to the FCF’s All Pro Team as the first team tight end. Riding that high as well as watching his Championship Game teammates Cecil Cherry and Qwan’tez Stiggers pick up awards of their own the BAFC was ready to compete on Saturday.
It was a hard fought game, but the Zappers behind the play of Quarterback Kelly Bryant and Superback Shun Thomas the Zappers offense scored 42 points. Despite the loss, the BAFC can hang their hats on the fact that they were in the game until the last minute. Now that Auger has showcased his versatility, and play making ability while garnering the recognition he deserves, he will now look to the next level for his next opportunity.
What Does the Future Hold?
Tommy Auger has been accepted into the XFL Showcase circuit and will attend these tryouts in an effort to land an XFL contract for the February 2023 kick off. Unless of course an NFL team comes calling in search of a young, athletic tight end who can do many things the tight end position is asked to excel at in the NFL. Only time will tell where Tommy winds up in 2023 and beyond, but wherever he goes…there is no doubt touchdowns will follow.
