The Becht Connection: Battlehawks Running Back Mataeo Durant to Join New York Jets in Rookie Mini Camp

Another Battlehawks player is being given an NFL opportunity this time on the Offensive side of the ball. Running Back Mataeo Durant will be joining the New Jets for their Mini Camp per his Agent Joshua Grady. Durant was selected by the Battlehawks in the November 2022 XFL Draft after coming out of Duke, and spending the 2022 NFL Training Camp with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Durant appeared in nine games for the Battlehawks with one start for the Battlehawks in 2023. The former 1st Team ACC Running Back totaled 39 Rushing Attempts for 117 Rushing Yards in addition to 11 Receptions for 78 Rushing Yards for St. Louis as a reserve Running Back for Anthony Becht’s 7-3 squad. Durant while used sparingly, shined on all facets of Special Teams in addition to being an effective pass protector on 3rd downs.

Durant is so far the second Battlehawks player to earn a training camp invite, along with Freedom Akinmoladun who is getting ready to attend the Dolphins Rookie Mini Camp. While XFL players can not officially sign NFL Contracts until May 15th, the beginning stages of getting players into rookie mini camp bodes well for the 3rd iteration of the league which has seen over 60 players earn NFL contracts since it’s return in 2020.
