With NFL and CFL Training Camps set to open and free agents looking to land coveted roster spots, HUB Football will host a free agent workout CAMP this Sunday in San Diego with pro scouts in attendance
CAMP presented by HUB Football, a series of one-day free agent workout camps for aspiring pros, is set to host its latest event this Sunday at Helix Charter High School in San Diego with scouts from the NFL, CFL, USFL and USA Rugby expected to attend.
The roster of confirmed participants includes a mix of NFL veterans, players who’ve previously participated in offseason programs and training camps, and former collegiate players looking to land their first shot at making an NFL, CFL or other professional roster.
Notable NFL veteran free agents set to take part in Sunday’s CAMP include former Philadelphia Eagles second-round pick Jordan Matthews and former Denver Broncos second-round pick Rahim Moore. Matthews will be auditioning as a tight end after beginning his career as a wide receiver. In seven NFL seasons with Philadelphia, San Francisco and Buffalo, Matthews racked up 274 catches for 3,288 yards and 22 touchdowns. Meanwhile, Moore, a free safety, is looking to get back into the NFL after stints in the AAF and XFL. A former UCLA Bruin, who was originally drafted by Denver in the second-round in 2011, Moore recorded nine career picks during his NFL tenure that included stints with the Broncos, Houston Texans and Cleveland Browns.
Besides the NFL vets, there also is an impressive lineup of youngsters hoping to impress scouts at Sunday’s CAMP. That group includes former Baylor quarterback Jalan McClendon; former Louisville running back Malik Williams, who spent time previously with the Atlanta Falcons and Pittsburgh Steelers; wide receivers Emanuel Hall, formerly of Missouri, and Jordan McCray, formerly of Oklahoma State; former Rice linebacker Emmanuel Ellerbee, who has spent time with several NFL teams, most recently Houston; cornerbacks KJ Sails out of South Florida and Traveon Beck out of Cal-Berkeley, and defensive end Myles Cheatham out of San Diego State.
HUB Football’s first three CAMPs of 2021 have led to an impressive 24 free agents signing pro contracts, including 10 with NFL teams and 14 others with CFL squads.
The NFL signees include running backs Darius Clark and Mikey Daniel (Carolina), wide receivers Devin Ross (New England) and Andy Jones (San Francisco), defensive end Jamell Garcia-Williams (Arizona), tight end Cheyenne O’Grady (Cincinnati), safety Ladarius Wiley (Seattle), linebacker Quentin Poling (New Orleans), defensive tackle Olive Sagapolu (Atlanta) and long snapper Mitchell Fraboni (Houston).
CFL signees include quarterbacks Shea Patterson (British Columbia) and McLeod Bethel-Thompson (Toronto), running back Devonte Williams (Winnipeg), wide receiver Tim Lukas (British Columbia), offensive linemen Jalen Burks (Toronto), Erick Browne (Edmonton) and Nick Callender (Montreal), cornerbacks Mike Stevens (Saskatchewan), Adonis Davis (Hamilton), Robert Nelson, Jr. (Montreal), Prince Charles Iworah (Montreal) and Hakeem Bailey (Winnipeg), and linebackers Nigel Harris (Saskatchewan) and Ethan Aguayo (Edmonton).
CAMP is a pathway and opportunity for aspiring pro athletes to show off their skills for talent evaluators from the NFL and other professional leagues, including the CFL. CAMP is not a combine-style workout, but rather it is designed to mimic workouts that take place routinely at NFL facilities across the country. Players do individual work with position coaches, while also competing in one-on-one and team drills. Since its inception in 2019, roughly half of the teams in the NFL have attended CAMPs to scout free agents in-person, while nearly every CFL team has been represented. In addition, film from all CAMPs is sent to more than 800 NFL and CFL talent evaluators, along with scouting professionals from other leagues.
And CAMP is unique in that it limits its roster to 50-60 players, ensuring that only the best-of-the-best receive an invitation to participate.
Players pay a small registration fee to participate and they have an option to purchase a copy of their film from the day, film which again is distributed to every NFL and CFL team. Players also pay their own travel costs to and from San Diego, but the results have spoken for themselves. Since CAMP presented by HUB Football launched in 2019, a total of 294 players have participated in the program, and 68 have gone on to sign professional contracts, an impressive 23.1 percent.
