The CFL has what they call a Negotiation List in which each team releases names of players currently not in the league that they would like to sign. On Thursday the Canadian league released their teams’ list, which had quite a few XFL players on it.
The players on the list are international players that have not had their contractual rights claimed by another CFL team. The league does have a draft, but it’s primarily for Canadian players.
Each team has released 10 players they wish to claim the rights to, should they decide to play in the CFL. Some are currently in college, some are on NFL teams, either on active lists, or practice squads. Some aren’t playing at all.
This list has many XFL players on it, and some that could be targeted by the league once the next season commences (we do not know for sure when that will be).
PJ Walker, Jordan Ta’amu, Jacques Patrick, Deatrick Nichols, and DeAndre Thompkins are among XFL stars that were named. Josh Rosen, Shea Patterson, Bryce Perkins, and Anthony Gordon are some of the QBs I listed that would be great targets for the XFL, and apparently, the CFL agrees.
The league minimum for American players in the CFL is $65,000, Canadian. Which at the time of press is about $48,000 in American dollars. Less than the projected XFL minimum of $55,000.
This is more proof of the power of the XFL. Not only are there now 20 players in the NFL at the moment, but others that aren’t, but played in our league are getting attention from other major professional football leagues.
It is unlikely one would choose to play in the CFL, although these are minimums, and not reflective of what the player could stand to make. That said, anything can happen, and players have the right to negotiate with anyone they choose.
Although no player is allowed to negotiate a contract with the CFL until their current deal has ended, if players like Walker wanted to play there, they would have to wait until the beginning of the next NFL league year.
Other notable XFL players on the list are Tarvarus McFadden, Isaiah Williams, and Connor Cook.
