The Tampa Bay Vipers have placed cornerback Shelton Lewis on the injured reserve, according to XFL.com. Lewis was far from sharp Sunday before reportedly exiting the game with a hand injury, in the team’s 23-3 loss to the New York Guardians. The team has not confirmed the injury.
Coming into week one, Lewis was the team’s No. 1 corner on the Vipers’ defensive depth chart in week one. While the team is deep at defensive back, look for a combination of Anthoula Kelly and Jalen Collins to split time in the top cornerback role until one emerges as the clear CB1.
Lewis was drafted by the Vipers during ‘Phase 5’ of the XFL Draft. During training camp, Lewis emerged as a starting-caliber corner when the team traded Arrion Springs, the team’s top pick at the cornerback position to the Los Angeles Wildcats in exchange for Collins. Collins came in and made an impact, but still factored in behind Lewis on the depth charts.
The team looks to shake off the rough start and rebound on the road again, as they travel across-country to Seattle, Washington to take on the Seattle Dragons. As soon as updated injury reports, depth charts, and announcements are made, XFL News Hub will have all the information.
