The Renegades quarterback Eric Dungey is essentially taking a week’s leave from football, citing personal reasons.
Very fortunate Coach Stoops understands and supports the meaning of family first and is allowing me to be released for the week due to personal family reasons. Excited to get back to Dallas with the @xflrenegades next week and get after it. #StillRasingHell
Dungey was Phillip Nelsen’s primary backup in their week one loss to St. Louis, and Syracuse fans were clamoring for their QB to take the field as the Renegades offense sputtered. With Landry Jones likely to reclaim his starting gig this week, Dungey would’ve likely been the 3rd QB on the depth chart.
Enter Brogan Roback. The former Eastern Michigan QB turned heads by leading a struggling program to a bowl game, and he did some great things during his time as an Eagle. He has good size at 6’3″, 220, and has a live arm. The Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers kicked the tires on him in the last two offseasons, and he put up solid preseason tape with 152 yards and a score.
He was previously the BattleHawks QB alongside Jordan Ta’amu and Taylor Heinicke, but was let go when they signed Nick Fitzgerald. Roback is as good a QB3 option as you’ll find in the XFL, but it’s likely his stay in Dallas will just be for the week.
Eric Dungey seems committed to being back the next week, and it appears he’s worked something out with Bob Stoops. It’s not clear what the situation is, but our thoughts are with his family this week, and we’ll look forward to seeing him back in the league week 3.
