As the XFL Off-Season continues to progress and the XFL Combine is in full swing, Coach Anthony Becht was thrown another challenge this Tuesday afternoon. After working out for the New York Giants on the 17th of July, fan favorite Kevin Atkins is returning to the NFL with Big Blue for his 2nd opportunity with the NFL.
Atkins came to the XFL after spending Five years at Fresno State University totalling 141 tackles and 16.5 sacks before going undrafted in 2022. Atkins would spend with the 49ers, before being drafted with the 38th overall pick in the 2022 XFL November Draft. During the 2023 season Atkins totaled 14 tackles, a sack, and had two fumble recoveries in 10 games in his 1st professional season of his career.
Atkins becomes the 33rd XFL player to sign an NFL contract this offseason, joining seven other Battlehawks teammates who have been signed since May 15. He also worked out with the Atlanta Falcons in May upon completion of the season. The Giants have been extremely vocal about their support of Spring Football, as Asst GM Brandon Brown was adamant of the potential both leagues can provide to the NFL.
So far, 127 invitations have been sent to XFL players for camps or to hold individual workouts with NFL teams since the conclusion of the XFL regular season. Most recently, Nick Tiano St. Louis’ Back up QB worked out for the Buffalo Bills, as more Battlehawks could be transitioning to the NFL as injuries build up in during NFL training camp. It is worth noting that per the XFL PR department Atkins player rights will remain with St. Louis if he chooses to return to the XFL.
