A Closer Look At the Head Coaches for the 2021 TSL Season
As The Spring League gets going, let’s take a look at the head coaches of all eight teams this season.
Generals: Bart Andrus
Coach Andrus is welcomed back by the Generals as he led them to the TSL Championship in 2020. Coach Andrus is a very experienced coach having coached in multiple professional football leagues, and a couple of stints as a head coach at college programs. Coach Andrus started his head coaching career at Rocky Mountain College located in Billings, Montana. In his lone year at Rocky Mountain College he went 6-4. Coach Andrus then went on to coach in the NFL Europe league, CFL, and UFL, where he compiled an overall record of 39-53 winning one World Bowl while coaching in the NFL Europa league.
Aviators: Terry Shea
The Aviators are bringing back Terry Shea as their head coach after leading them to a 2-1 record last season and an appearance in the TSL Championship. Shea is an offensive minded coach. He has had a stint as the quarterbacks coach at the University of Oregon, and he was a quarterbacks coach for the Kansas City Chiefs and St. Louis Rams. Coach Shea does have head coaching experience prior to coaching the Aviators. He was the head coach for two years at San Jose State, as well as a five years at Rutgers University. In those seven seasons of coaching college Shea recorded a 26-50-2 record.
Jousters: Kevin Gilbride
Kevin Gilbride has plenty of coaching experience, but he lacks head coaching experience. Gilbride was an assistant in the NFL for over 20 years and during those 20 years he went on to win two Super Bowl rings as the New York Giants offensive coordinator. Gilbride has coached for many different professional football teams over his career, but he has only had three seasons of head coaching experience. He was the head coach for the San Diego Chargers in 1997 and 1998 where he had a record of 6-16. His most recent head coaching job was with the New York Guardians, where he went 3-2 in 2020.
Linemen: Hal Mumme
Hal Mumme may have the most experience of all the TSL coaches when it comes to being a head coach. Coach Mumme made numerous different stops in the college game. He was the head coach for seven different schools that spanned over 28 years. While coaching in college he totaled a record of 142 wins, 152 losses, and 1 tie. Most recently he was an offensive coordinator for the Dallas Renegades in the XFL. It will be interesting to see if Mumme’s college coaching experience will translate to the professional ranks.
Conquerors: Jerry Glanville
Jerry Glanville will be returning as the Conquerors head coach for his second season with the team. Coach Glanville started his coaching career in 1967 where he was the defensive coordinator at Western Kentucky University. Since then he has had many different coaching positions, including head coaching roles with the Houston Oilers, Atlanta Falcons, and at Portland State University. Coach Glanville has an overall record as 60-69 as a head coach.
Blues: Ted Cottrell
Ted Cottrell is returning as the Blues head coach for the second season after leading them to a 1-2 record in the 2020 season. Cottrell has a lot of experience as a football coach. He began his coaching career in 1973 at Rutgers as a defensive line coach and since then he has held many different positions including one head coaching job. His head coaching job was with the New York Sentinels where he struggled going 0-6 in his one season there. Coach Cottrell will be looking to improve upon the 1-2 record from last year and build this team up in his second season.
Sea Lions: Larry Kirksey
This will be Larry Kirksey’s first season as the head coach of the Sea Lions. Coach Kirksey has held many different coaching positions in both college football as well as the pros. He was an assistant for a handful of NFL teams where he won a Super Bowl with the San Francisco 49ers. He has had one head coaching job and it was at Kentucky State. He only coached one season there and in that one season he went 2-7-2.
Alphas: Peter Vaas
Coach Vaas is an experienced head coach that has had success in the NFL Europa League. He has held many different assistant coaching positions throughout his career, and he has been a head coach in college as well as the pros. He got his first head coaching experience in the college game at Allegheny and Holy Cross. Then after that he was able to land a job as head coach in the NFL Europe League where he won two World Bowls with the Berlin Thunder.
