The Spring League Championship Preview: Linemen, Jousters Collide in Mega Bowl
This Saturday, The Spring League (TSL) will wrap its most ambitious season to date by crowning its 2021 champion in The Mega Bowl (3 p.m. ET, FOX).
Emanating from Rice Stadium in Houston, the Mega Bowl will feature the Linemen (5-1), winners of the TSL North Division, squaring off against the Jousters (4-2), TSL South Division Champions.
The Lineman are lead on the field by quarterback Ryan Willis (Virginia Tech, Kansas), TSL’s leading passer in 2021, who amassed 1,680 yards and 13 touchdowns over six games and thrived in Hal Mumme’s air raid offense.
The Linemen also boasts three of TSL’s leading receivers – Michael Dereus (26 catches, 435 yards, 2 TD), Ben Putman (37 catches, 346 yards, 3 TD) and Reece Horn (28 catches, 313 yards, 3 TD). Linemen receiver Isaac Zico leads the league in touchdown catches, hauling in four on just 11 receptions on the season. Minter lead TSL in rushing touchdowns with 4.
Meanwhile, the Jousters are guided by Luis Perez, a former Division II National Player of the Year and National Champion at Texas A&M Commerce, who finished the regular season with 655 passing yards and 7 touchdown passes, the third most in TSL.
The Linemen and Jousters have combined to win nine of the last 10 collective games. Both teams lost in Week 1, but have been the best teams in TSL since. The lone defeat either team has had since Week 1 was a last-second Hail Mary loss by the Jousters in Week 5.
The Mega Bowl will feature the TSL’s top offense, the Linemen (29.5 PPG) against the league’s top defense, as the Jousters are giving up a stingy 11.3 PPG. The Jousters have also forced nine turnovers, including six interceptions, over the six-game TSL regular season.
Led by CEO Brian Woods, TSL is the premier professional development league football league operating in the U.S. and abroad. About to wrap its fifth season, TSL is the first league since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 to play more than three consecutive full seasons.
