Tanner Engstrand, Michigan’s offensive analyst, is leaving the University to join the XFL in Washington D.C.
XFL’s D.C. tweeted out Wednesday afternoon that Engstrand will be the team’s offensive coordinator for Pep Hamilton. The two coaches worked together on Jim Harbaugh’s staff at Michigan. Also included in the tweet are new Defensive Coordinator Jeffrey Fitzgerald and Special teams/defensive backs assistant coach Steven Wilson.
Engstrand joined the Michigan staff in 2018 as an offensive analyst. Before the Wolverines, he served as OC at the University of San Diego. He was there four years before leaving for Michigan.
Engrstrand got his start as a graduate assistant on Jim Harbaugh’s staff during the 2005 season at the University of San Diego.
Jeffrey Fitzgerald is a former college and NFL linebackers coach. He served as linebackers coach for the Washington Redskins, Arizona Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, and Indianapolis Colts. For XFL D.C. it will be his first Defensive Coordinator position.
Pep Hamilton was the assistant head coach and passing game coordinator at Michigan in 2017 and 2018 before taking the gig with the XFL. It is his first head coaching job at any level.
XFL D.C. joins the XFL Tampa Bay franchise as rounding out the coaching staff. The XFL is expected to kick off its first season in February of 2020.
