John McClain of the Houston Chronicle is reporting a slew of hirings for the XFL Houston Franchise under Head Coach/GM June Jones. Most notable is the new Director of Player Personnel Randy Mueller. He was recently the general manager for the Salt Lake Stallions of the Alliance of American Football (AAF).
Mueller is best known as the general manager for the NFL’s Miami Dolphins from 2005 to 2007 and New Orleans Saints from 2000 to 2001. He has worked with the Seattle Seahawks from 1983 to 1999 and Los Angeles Chargers from 2008 to 2018.
Randy’s younger brother, Rick Mueller was most recently with the Philadelphia Eagles as Director of Pro Personnel.
Will Lewis was named Assistant Director Of Player Personnel. Lewis was general manager for the Memphis Express of the Alliance of American Football (AAF). He played in the NFL and CFL in the ’80s with a brief stint as a coach. He later transitioned into the front office.
He was with the Green Bay Packers, Seattle Seahawks, and Kansas City Chiefs. Lewis is the father of Ryan Lewis, NFL cornerback with the Buffalo Bills.
Other position coaches he noted were Dan Morrison Quarterbacks Coach, John Estes Offensive Line Coach, A.J. Smith Offensive Assistant, Tom Mason Linebackers Coach, not Defensive Coordinator that we reported earlier and Derrius Bell Defensive Backs coach.
Dan Morrison was most recently Offensive Assistant and QB coach for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats(CFL). Morrison coached in the NCAA before that, including two stints with June Jones as an Associate Head Coach and Quarterbacks Coach at Southern Methodist University from 2008 to 2014, and Quarterbacks Coach at the University of Hawaii from 1999 to 2007.
John Estes is a former center and guard for the University of Hawaii. He was named to the WAC All-Decade team in 2000. He had a brief stint in the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Arizona Cardinals. John was an Offensive Graduate Assistant at the University of Hawaii in 2016 and 2017.
A.J. Smith was Quarterback Coach of Jackson State in 2018. Before that, he was Southeastern University Quarterback’s Coach.
Derrius Bell was a Defensive Backs coach at UTEP for five seasons. Bell was a graduate assistant under then Defensive Coordinator Tom Mason.
