In a tweet by TSN’s Jim Mullin in which he implied Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson said that in purchasing the XFL he wanted games throughout the year. Johnson took to Twitter to respond.
“One of the more interesting nuggets from what @TheRock said when buying the assets of the #XFL was that he wanted games at various times of the year. This is a possible path that fits that narrative. Thoughts?”
For the record, when I first saw this tweet, my first reaction was, he never said: “he wanted games at various times of the year.” We are one of the few news outlets that have documented everything from the XFL’s bankruptcy to its purchase by Dany Garica, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, and RedBird Capital. We didn’t recall him ever saying that. Then our hunch was validated by The Rock himself, when he responded.
“Hi gents, I never said that. We’ll figure out a smart season that’ll create phenomenal opportunities for players and be the best experience for fans. I played ball for years and wrestled 280+ nights a year (for years) so I know the value in smart scheduling and recovery.”
This is the first time since the XFL/CFL ‘talks’ Dwayne Johnson mentioned anything on social media about the CFL. The main part of his tweet will be speculated for days by fans and the media.
“We’ll figure out a smart season that’ll create phenomenal opportunities for players and be the best experience for fans.”
Is Johnson giving us a clue about a potential merger or a parallel playing season? No one knows at this point because the situation is so fluid.
What we do know is that Johnson is very much following all the XFL/CFL chatter on social media. That is a good thing, as busy as he is. The ‘Black Adam’ movie is set to begin shooting in April.

Ultimately will it be a full AFC/NFC style merger? Possibly. But that is a long way off yet. For now a parallel season with both brands advertising the other (adverts, promos, highlights) whilst also making some kind of deal where they pick up players from the others pool, rather than the NFL pool. Essentially to give those who come up from the Colleges a bit more incentive to join the XFL or the CFL if neither brand is going to hire “ex” NFL guys. This would ensure that the cream of the crop go into the NFL, whilst those just below the radar are still given a massive platform.

You can’t play football in Canada in February or March, it’s just too cold. The Rock should enter a team to play in the CFL in 2021. That would create some excitement.
