The San Antonio Brahmas have had a wild first official week as an XFL franchise. On Wednesday, we saw the latest twist come out of left field involving team captain Joel Dublanko.
The Brahmas confirmed to XFL News Hub that the team has released Dublanko. San Antonio also released tight end Jamal Pettigrew, the team confirmed.
Dublanko’s release comes as a major shock. Days before their season opener against the St. Louis BattleHawks, the Brahmas named the former Cincinnati standout as one of the team’s five captains.
Furthermore, Dublanko was penciled in as the team’s starting middle linebacker on their Week 1 depth chart. It seemed as if Dublanko was in a position to play a big role in San Antonio’s defense in 2023.
Dublanko’s release is the latest in a wild week for the Brahmas. They lost their first game in improbable fashion on Sunday. Leading 15-3 with 3:02 left, San Antonio fell to the BattleHawks 18-15 on the strength of a two-touchdown performance from St. Louis signal caller AJ McCarron.
Then, the Brahmas dealt with an issue off the field. San Antonio VP of Business/Event Operation Mike Sheehan was fired by the XFL on Tuesday. The XFL did not go into specifics, only saying it was a personal matter.
The Brahmas hit the road for the first of three games away from home this week. San Antonio travels to Orlando to take on a Guardians team looking to bounce back from a 33-12 loss at the hands of the Houston Roughnecks in Week 1.
