San Antonio Brahmas Name Starting Quarterback, Team Captains

The San Antonio Brahmas have a quarterback. The team announced Jack Coan will enter the 2023 XFL season as their starting quarterback ahead of their game Sunday against the St. Louis BattleHawks.

Coan played his collegiate football at Wisconsin and Notre Dame. He spent four years with the Badgers before transferring to play for the Fighting Irish.

Coan started his third year in Wisconsin, playing in all 14 games the Badgers played in 2019-20. He completed 69.6% of his passes, throwing for 2727 yards and 18 touchdowns.

The Badgers finished the season 10-4, with wins over Michigan and a top-10-ranked Minnesota. Wisconsin made the Big 10 Championship but lost to Ohio State. The team earned a place in the Rose Bowl but fell to Oregon.

Coan was under center for the Fighting Irish in 2021, and once again he thrived. He completed 65.6% of his passes, throwing for 3150 yards and 25 touchdowns.

Notre Dame went 11-2, with Coan getting a massive 41-13 win over Wisconsin in Week 4. The Fighting Irish earned a spot in the Fiesta Bowl but came up short against #9 Oklahoma State.

Coan went on to enter the 2022 NFL Draft but didn’t hear his name called. He signed on with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent. However, he did not make the team.

In addition to being named starting quarterback, the Brahmas named Coan as a team captain on Tuesday. The other players who received team captain honors are:

  • RB Jacques Patrick
  • LB Ben Davis
  • LB Joel Dublanko
  • P Brad Wing

Of the five team captains, Wing is the most experienced player overall. The 32-year-old spent four years in the NFL, with the majority of that time being spent with the New York Giants. Wing has spring football experience, as he played for the Memphis Express in the AAF.

Patrick also has spring football experience. In fact, he has previous experience in the XFL. The Florida State product spent the 2020 XFL season with the Tampa Bay Vipers, racking up 254 yards and two touchdowns on 60 carries.

Dublanko played collegiately for Cincinnati, where he was a big contributor to their historic 2021 team. The Brahmas linebacker racked up 113 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, and 5.5 sacks as the Bearcats made the College Football Playoff. The 25-year-old spent time with the Seattle Seahawks before the XFL Draft in November.

Davis began his collegiate career with Alabama before transferring to Texas to finish his collegiate career. In his lone season with the Longhorns, Davis recorded 15 tackles, four tackles for a loss, and two sacks while playing as an edge rusher.

The XFL season kicks off on February 18, with the Brahmas hosting the BattleHawks on the 19th.
