This week the San Francisco 49ers announced the team had signed former Dallas Renegades RB Austin Walter to a one-year contract extension through 2021.
Walter signed with the 49ers practice squad on September 23rd, 2020. He was later promoted to the active roster on November 11th. In four games for San Francisco, he registered 1 carry for 3 yards and 1 reception for 27 yards on offense. He also returned five kickoffs for 93 yards on special teams.
In May of 2019, Walter signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent. He spent camp with San Francisco and was later waived in August. He later signed to the New York Giants practice squad and was promoted to the Giants’ active roster on October 10th, 2019. He appeared in 1 game and was later waived in October.
Walter was drafted by the Dallas Renegades in the 2020 XFL Supplemental Draft. In his time with the Renegades, he appeared in all 5 XFL games and had 4 carries for 19 yards and 2 receptions for 31 yards.
The 24-year-old native of Crosby, TX, played his college ball at Rice University. For the Owls, he appeared in 49 games during his four-year career. He finished with 345 carries for 1,744 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground. 79 receptions for 803 yards and 5 touchdowns through the air and added 71 kickoff returns for 1,548 yards for a 21.8 average.
