Denver Broncos Sign Former XFL Star Josh Hammond
The Denver Broncos have quickly moved to strengthen their receiving depth, signing former XFL wide receiver Josh Hammond following Jalen Virgil’s knee injury, which has left an open spot on the roster.
Standing at 6-0 and weighing 194 pounds, Hammond has shown his capabilities in the XFL, where he played 10 games for the DC Defenders, notching up 34 receptions for 331 yards and one touchdown. After playing college football at Florida, he signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted free agent in 2020, spending two seasons there before stints with the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots.
Despite failing to make a permanent mark in three NFL teams, Hammond’s recent performance in the XFL earned him another NFL chance, this time with the Broncos. He also had a workout with Denver in July before training camp.
This signing adds depth at wide receiver after Jalen Virgil’s meniscus injury, and Hammond will compete with several reserve receivers, including Kendall Hinton, Michael Bandy, and Lil Jordan Humphrey, to make the Broncos 53-man roster.
According to Mike Klis of 9NEWS Denver, the acquisition is likely aimed at supporting the team in the remainder of the preseason, though Hammond’s inclusion in the regular season cannot be ruled out, especially considering the team’s recent injury woes.
Kansas City Chiefs Agree to Terms with Juwan Green
The Kansas City Chiefs have also looked to the XFL to boost their roster, agreeing to terms with Seattle Sea Dragons wide receiver Juwan Green.
Green, 25, who stands at 6 feet and weighs 187 pounds, showcased his skills in 10 games with the XFL’s Seattle Sea Dragons in 2023. He hauled in 29 passes for 420 yards, leading Seattle with 14.5 yards per catch and scoring six touchdown receptions. Additionally, he caught 8 passes for 89 yards and 2 touchdowns in the post-season.
Before his XFL success, Green had joined the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Atlanta Falcons, following the 2020 NFL Draft, also spending time with the Detroit Lions and Tennessee Titans without being active in an NFL game.
Green is the 13th player from the Sea Dragons roster to be signed, with a total of 64 contracts now signed by XFL players this offseason.
XFL Influence Continues to Grow
These signings bring the total number of NFL contracts signed by XFL players to 64, further solidifying the XFL’s influence on the NFL. The league announced that 179 invitations have been sent to XFL players for camps or individual workouts with NFL teams since the conclusion of the XFL regular season.
As the NFL teams continue to scout and recognize the talent in the XFL, more players may find opportunities to showcase their abilities on a grander stage. The future looks promising for the XFL, and the signings of Josh Hammond and Juwan Green are testament to the quality found within the league. Both Denver and Kansas City will hope that these acquisitions provide the depth and spark needed for a successful season ahead.
