After making two big moves to their roster, the Arlington Renegades cut two players to bring the roster back down to 51 players.
Linebacker Nick Temple and offensive guard Maea Teuhema were removed from the Renegades’ roster on the XFL website Wednesday.
The moves come the same day that CFL star linebacker Darnell Sankey and former Renegades left tackle Willie Beavers were signed onto the team. Arlington had to make quick moves to ensure that they were down to the 51-man roster prior to Saturday’s game against the Vegas Vipers.
Temple being released comes as a surprise in the sense that he was looked at as one of the more veteran players at linebacker with his experience in the AAF, CFL, and XFL. He’s proven to be a good player and always one of the leading tacklers and leaders on each team he has been on. The problem lies with how deep the linebacker position is now that Sankey joins the group. Someone at linebacker had to go and it appears Temple was the guy.
Again, Teuhema is another example of a player who has proven experience in multiple leagues with the NFL, AAF, XFL, and USFL. He’s been a guy who has brought good depth to an offensive line and showcased good enough skills to play at a high level. Beavers is a guy though that should come in and start right away at left tackle which is a big position for the team. It’s unfortunate that Teuhema was found on the wrong side of things, but might have a chance to sign with another team in the XFL or rejoin the USFL.
The reality now is when players get signed onto XFL teams this late in the game that good players are going to be cut. Arlington is deep at most positions so it’s a good problem to have if you are head coach Bob Stoops and the coaching staff. While these releases are bad news for those players, the team did improve their roster Wednesday which makes them more dangerous heading into the season.
