With the additions made to the Arlington Renegades’ secondary, the team made some moves to decrease the number of players in that position.
XFL Analyst posted on Twitter that defensive back Donatello Brown was released from the team Thursday. On the XFL website, Brown’s name is no longer on the Renegades’ roster.
Brown went undrafted in the 2017 NFL Draft where he first signed with the Green Bay Packers. He spent half the season on their practice squad and the other half on the active roster. Brown was waived by the Packers prior to the 2018 season. It would be the only season he spent in the NFL.
His next stop would be in 2019 for the Atlanta Legends of the AAF where he only started one game in the eight-game shortend season. During the 2019 AAF season, he recorded nine tackles in seven games played before league operations were shut down.
The XFL came calling for Brown when he was drafted by the Renegades in the ninth round of the XFL Draft in 2019. In five games played with the team, Brown recorded 16 tackles and one pass deflection before the season ended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Renegades drafted him once again in the XFL Draft back in November.
In terms of the move, it’s tough in the sense that Brown knows what head coach Bob Stoops expects from his team after playing under him in 2020. Brown proved to be an asset to the secondary and played well in coverage and wrapping up the tackler. He was one of the key players in the secondary that help led one of the top defensive units in the league.
On the flip side, the secondary is currently so crowded with talent that there will be good players like Brown who aren’t going to make the team. There might be a team in the XFL who might bring them into their camp if they have injuries to the secondary. The roster is slowly getting clearer for the Renegades as they try to construct their secondary for the regular season.
