Another One: XFL Special Teams Player of the Year Set to Try Out with Detroit Lions

It’s been quite a journey for Darrius Shepherd the past year. After getting released by the Steelers in January of 2022, Shepherd saw himself bouncing between the New Jersey Generals of the USFL before spending a couple months with the Denver Broncos only to see himself get released in October once again by the NFL. But when the St. Louis Battlehawks drafted Shepherd in November of the XFL Draft, the Missouri Native was set to show the NFL that he wasn’t done yet, putting together one of the XFL’s more productive campaigns in 2023.

Shepherd was an instant playmaker for St. Louis in 2023. The NDSU alum totaled 48 receptions (4th), and 519 receiving yards (7th) while leading the league in Kick Return Yards with 907. Shepherd was an UDFA coming out of North Dakota State in 2019, spending time with the Packers, Chiefs, Cardinals, Vikings, Steelers and Broncos while playing in the NFL.

With the Lions facing several suspensions and recent releases at the Wide Receiver position, due to a gambling controversy, Shepherd is in prime position to make Detroit’s 53-Man roster. With a wealth of expierence in the NFL playing with Quarterbacks like Trey Lance, Aaron Rodgers, Pat Mahomes, Ben Roethlisberger, and Russell Wilson in addition to his monumental success in Alt-Football Leagues, Shepherd will be a key addition to either the Lions or whichever team signs him in the NFL.
