Report: USFL Playoffs Will Be Played In Canton, Ohio, Not Birmingham

Roy S Johnson reports that the USFL playoffs will not be played at Protective Stadium in Birmingham Alabama. Instead, due to scheduling conflicts with the World Games, it will be moved to Canton, Ohio, home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

“The USFL’s postseason games will be played at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium, starting with the semifinals on Saturday, June 25. The championship game will be played on Sunday, July 3.”

USFL playoff games in Birmingham is a huge blow to the city, especially if the Stallions are a part of it. It would have brought in a lot of fans to be part of the Championship game. But the USFL still plans to make right its hotel obligations and the city still has the World Games taking place around the same time.

“League officials said it will fulfill all previously agreed-upon contractual obligations with the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center and Legion Field, including hotel nights.”

The playoff issue timing was known throughout the negotiations between the USFL and Birmingham. It even could have prevented the league from playing at Protective Stadium in Birmingham.

“Birmingham officials have long known of the possibility that playoff games might be rescheduled, according to the league. Back in November 2021, the logjam nearly thwarted plans for the FOX Sports-owned league to play its inaugural season in Birmingham in an incubator format.”
