The XFL Kickoff Rule

Minor Tweaks and the Success of XFL Kickoff Rules
The NFL will be making minor changes to the XFL kickoff rules but largely taking it as it is. The receiving team can’t move until the ball hits the ground or a player in the landing zone or end zone. The kicking team also cannot move until one of those things happens.
If a ball lands before the landing zone, a touchback puts the ball at the 40. If it hits the landing zone and is downed, the touchback is at the 20. If the ball goes into the endzone or out the back, the touchback is at the 35. There are no fair signals or catches allowed.
Though it might seem like a big change, it is hard to argue about the success rate. The XFL had more than 90% of its kickoffs returned in 2023, something the NFL definitely took notice of. Getting the kicking game involved without compromising player safety is a big move for the NFL.
The XFL vs. NFL
Though there will still be injuries – players in the NFL are larger and faster than the XFL – the move should drastically reduce them. Players won’t have as much speed or momentum when collisions do happen, making contact a safer endeavor.
Most importantly, the kicking game will return to the NFL. In recent years, the vast majority of kickoffs have resulted in a touchback. Kickers have stronger legs but not every kick can reach the back of the endzone.
In the end, the fans benefit. Rather than kickoffs being considered a time to grab snacks or head to the bathroom, this new rule change should inject a much-needed infusion of excitement back into the mix.
The NFL is trying the move on a one-year basis as of right now. If there is a stark rise in kickoff returns, look for the rule change to remain in play.
