$2 Million Approved So Far For USFL Hub Season In Birmingham, Details On Season 2 & 3

Roy S Johnson, a recent guest on The Markcast, is reporting that The Greater Birmingham Convention & Visitors Bureau is the first entity to commit money to the USFL 2022 season in Birmingham.

“At a special call meeting of its board of directors Thursday, the CVB voted to contribute up to $2 million towards costs associated with hosting the eight teams in the city for 12 weeks in the spring of 2022.”

He noted that the CVB’s commitment is contingent upon other entities contributing to the hub USFL season. The City of Birmingham, Jefferson County, and the private sector, among others.

“The BJCC estimates costs to be $3,666.960 to host the league in a “bubble-like format. The breakdown includes weekly overhead ($1,019,600), weekly game day staffing (1,436,150), weekly services provided by the City of Birmingham (635,800), and equipment and labor for field conversions ($1,091,500).”

Johnson said that Michael Davis of Balch & Bingham is representing Fox Sports in the agreement. Davis noted to the group that.

“it was possible the league may host as many as four teams in Birmingham in the USFL’s second year, with as many as four teams playing in their respective cities. In the third year, the teams will play in their own cities.”

It looks like the USFL is moving forward with a 2022 season, and both Birmingham and Fox Sports seem to be happy with their agreement.

The season is expected to kick off Friday, April 15th, 2022.
