On Saturday the Detroit Lions worked out QBs Josh Johnson and Landry Jones. Their current backup Tom Savage suffered his 3rd concussion in 4 years.
We reported two weeks ago that Johnson turned down a contract offer with the Baltimore Ravens. Speculating that maybe he was waiting for a potential XFL opportunity. It now looks like the XFL is off the table as now he will have a legit shot of beating out David Fales for the backup role to Mathew Stafford. Johnson has signed with the Detroit Lions.
Johnson was the first overall pick in the AAF and was assigned to the San Diego Fleet. He never played for the league.
He has played for thirteen teams in his NFL career. He was a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, San Francisco 49ers, Sacramento Mountain Lions, Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals, New York Jets, Indianapolis Colts, Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens, New York Giants, Houston Texans, Oakland Raiders, and Washington Redskins.
With Johnson off the table, this still leaves the XFL with QB’s Landry Jones, Ryan Mallett and Connor Cook who was cut by the Lions earlier this year, among others. It will be interesting to see if others get picked up too as the NFL pre-season progresses.
