In a suddenly stacked XFL D.C. Defenders WR corps, Max McCaffrey is looking to make a name for himself. After struggling to make the field for the Raiders, Packers, Jaguars, Saints, and 49ers, it looks like there’s another speedbump in his NFL career. After serving a 4-game suspension last season, he’s facing a 10 game suspension to close out the 2019 season.
We’re not aware of the nature of these suspensions, and it would be poor journalism to speculate without cause, but the crucial detail remains: this will not affect his XFL season in any way.
Whatever issues exist with the NFL won’t carry over to the XFL, and Max McCaffrey stands ready to contribute to one of the league’s most vaunted offenses to this point.
McCaffrey brings elite tools to the table. With a 6’2″ frame and 4.3 speed, he should be able to take the top off defenses as a legit vertical threat. He’ll need to work on his route tree to bring his game to the next level, but I think he’ll mesh well with offensive guru Pep Hamilton’s scheme.
Alongside NFL talents like Eli Rodgers, Tre McBride and possibly Rashard Davis. McCaffrey will have other veteran targets to take some heat off him. The Defenders also have a pair of Quarterbacks that could utilize his skillset, as Cardale Jones and Tyree Jackson have elite arms mounted on big frames. They both have plus athleticism to extend plays outside of the pocket, creating opportunities for their receivers to get open.
It’s unfortunate that McCaffrey’s tenure in the NFL has taken this note, but I don’t expect any problems in the XFL. Look for him to do big things come February.
