Roughnecks WR Cam Phillips To Sign With Carolina Panthers

After many XFL fans and experts were questioning why Cam Phillips wasn’t getting his chance to work out for the NFL, it appears that it finally paid off.

NFL Draft Diamonds first reported that the Carolina Panthers are expected to sign former Houston Roughnecks receiver Cam Phillips to a deal.

So far, there is no word on the length and dollar amount on his expected contract. Phillips was recently brought in for a workout with the Carolina Panthers. The move means that he will reunite with his quarterback in Houston P.J. Walker.

Phillips blew up in the XFL last season as he was arguably the best receiver in the league. He led the league in receptions (31), receiving yards (455) and touchdowns (9) in five games. Phillips and Walker were considered the best quarterback-wide receiver duo as they dominated defenses.

How Cam Phillips Shapes Up on Panthers Offense

Carolina added Robby Anderson to the receiving core that will be joined by D.J. Moore and Curtis Samuel. Phillips is a dynamic receiver who was a deep threat receiver for the Roughnecks all last season. Not many defenses were able to stop Phillips in their tracks.

Moore appears to be the future of the Panthers franchise and Samuel is another young, dynamic receiver who can catch and even be used as a running back. Anderson is still young, but considered the veteran of the group.

Phillips will have some tough competition as he will most likely be competing with veteran receiver Seth Roberts and Pharoh Cooper for a roster spot. Both guys have had a history in the NFL and will have a slight advantage over Phillips early. If the Panthers keep five receivers, Phillips has a good chance of at least beating one of them for a roster spot.

Phillips was considered the perfect receiver in the XFL and proved to be a potential star. His game tape proved that he could play in the NFL and it appears that he will get his chance to do so. Carolina better watch out as the dynamic duo of Walker and Phillips is reuniting for a great comeback story.
