Merry Christmas: Battlehawks Claim DPOY Pita Taumoepenu

Coach Anthony Becht left Battlehawks fans wondering with a cryptic tweet Saturday afternoon that could of hinted several different things. A couple hours later, XFL News Hub’s Mike Mitchell reported that 2023 XFL Defensive Player of the Year Pita Taumoepenu would be signing with the Battlehawks for his return to Spring Football in 2024. This finishes up a busy week for St. Louis as the team signed Max Borghi, Mike Rose, and released LS Alexander Matheson (following his workout with the Rams.

Taumoepenu comes to St. Louis following his stint with the Jets in training camp. The Utah alum was a 6th round pick in 2017 to the San Francisco 49ers, while also having stints with the Cardinals, Seahawks, Falcons, and Broncos. In 11 NFL games Taumoepenu recorded 5 Tackles in his NFL career. Taumoepenu would join the Vegas Vipers during the XFL Draft, recording 26 Tackles, 4 Forced Fumbles and 7.5 Sacks enroute to his Defensive Player of the Year Award along with an All-XFL selection.

Among merger discussions, Taumoepenu (whose Vegas Vipers are slated to not return in 2024) seemed to have mutually jumped at the opportunity to join the Battlehawks in hopes of redeeming their upcoming season after falling short of the playoffs in 2023. Taumoepenu joins an already electrifying Defensive front Seven with players like Travis Feeney, Carson Wells, and Mike Rose. Currently the Battlehawks are primed to retain 42 players in the XFL/USFL’s Phase 1 draft rumored to be conducted on December 27th.
