After week 3 in the XFL season, all teams can only sign players already under league contract with team 9. No more free agents can be added to a team from outside the league directly. As we head into week 4, the Guardians will return home with a couple of key new players,
As for the old face making his season debut this week will be WR Tanner Gentry. The former University of Wyoming star is back after a stint on the injured list. Gentry was the 3rd round pick of the Guardians at the position in the original player draft. Adding him to the roster increases the depth at the position and should be one of the top targets on the field. He was impressive when with the Chicago Bears in pre-season and did make several catches inactive regular duty for them as well.
The newest face to the team joining the Guardians after a very brief stint with team 9 is local Peekskill New York product Derek Dennis. Dennis can play Guard or Tackle and was a regular starter at Temple University years ago and bounced around several NFL teams before really breaking out in Canada in 2005. Between 2015-2019 he spent 3 years with the Calgary Stampeders (15,16 & 18, 19) and Saskatchewan Roughriders (17). He was a 3 time CFL all-star and 1 time Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman award winner in the CFL. The high-quality veteran will add a strong presence to what has been an inconsistent line.
Week 4 will also be interesting with Matt McGloin officially declared out for the week, Marquis Williams and Luis Perez will likely both see time at the QB spot and maybe someone will rise to grab the position.
With all these changes, it will be interesting to see how the Guardians function. One thing is for sure, the offense will look different.
