Pep Hamilton during his time with the DC Defenders
On Monday, the Carolina Panthers reached out to the Houston Texans to inquire about their Offensive Coordinator position left vacant by former “wonderkid” Joe Brady. Hamilton who is currently serving as the Passing Game Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach has been with the Texans since 2021. He was the head coach and GM of the XFL’s DC Defenders.
Hamiliton’s stock has risen immensely over the past several years, as he was with Justin Herbert in LA, and most recently with Davis Mills in Houston. While many foresaw Herbert as a can’t miss star, Davis Mills seemingly overperformed with not only a lack of supporting cast but also with some exterior distractions affecting the organization. Hamilton’s success with Mills isn’t the only success story he’s had with a Stanford Quarterback.
Hamilton’s success with Quarterback could be traced back to his time with the Stanford Cardinals in 2010. There he would be promoted to Offensive Coordinator in 2011 working with Andrew Luck. Hamilton and Luck would join forces again with the Colts where Luck would enjoy two Pro Bowl seasons including an MVP level season in 2014. Hamilton would even make Former Defenders QB Cardale Jones look like an MVP at times.
Hamilton’s recent success has continued to propel him into high esteem in coaching circles. With a vast diverse of experiences over the past several years Hamilton is in prime position to land a premier offensive coordinator in the NFL. The Question is now, does he want to leave the Texans? And would it be possible for the Texans to offer him a promotion?
Hamiliton was brought in specifically by David Culley and the Texans are a squad looking to build off the culture they are developing. Regardless of record the Texans continued to play hard every game and had several upsets this year. More importantly, Davis Mills continued to progress and show command over the Texans offense.
Ultimately, Hamilton will continue to succeed no matter what. It seems the older he gets the more wisdom he continues to compile and is able to develop quality Quarterbacks. With Carolina struggling behind center and seemingly lacking direction, between Sam Darnold, PJ Walker and possibly Cam Newton all vying for playing time, Hamilton’s experience and demeanor, may be instrumental in creating a stable environment for not just Panthers, but for any team that hires.
