American v European Sports: Similarities and Differences Between the XFL and Rugby

The XFL is far from the NFL in terms of popularity. After its debut season in 2020, the league stopped following the COVID outbreak, which affected the size of its followership, leading to it filing for bankruptcy. It later announced plans to merge with the United States Football League in 2023.

The XFL and USFL are currently played as conferences under the United Football League, which began in March 2024. It released its rule book in February 2024, with several rules noticeably adopted from the XFL and USFL. While the XFL is noticeably similar to the NFL, we’ve compared how similar it is to the Rugby Union.

XFL v Rugby Union

While the XFL and Rugby Union are played with an oval ball on a large field, they possess different rules and styles of play. The XFL uses a smaller field with a 100-yard length and a width of 53.3 yards. The Rugby Union, on the other hand, is typically between 103–109 yards long and 74-76.5 yards wide. Their styles of play are significantly different. The XFL has a “double forward pass rule,” which permits a single play to have two forward passes. However, this is on the condition that the initial forward pass occurs behind the line of scrimmage. In Rugby Union, teammates must pass backward, as forward passes are penalized. Additionally, there are variations in the number of players, scoring systems, and gameplay structures between both sports. These distinctions in similar sports are common in other games and sports with American and European versions. We’ve explored some of them below.

Other Games and Sports With US and EU Versions

American v European Roulette

Significant differences between American and European roulette influence how the games play out and how the odds work. The primary distinction is the number of pockets on the wheel. American roulette has 38 pockets and features a “0” and a “00,” while European roulette only has 37 pockets, with a 0 included.  Most of the playing choices are the same, but American roulette has an extra bet called a “five-number bet.” Some versions of European roulette have an “en prison” rule and “call bets.” Casino sites typically allow users to play roulette online games in three versions: American, European, and French roulette. Some also include a guide on how to play each variant, which allows players to learn how to play roulette regardless of the variation.

NASCAR v. F1

NASCAR races are on oval paths, while F1 races happen on road courses all over the globe. The rules allow for more pit stops in NASCAR races so drivers can refuel and change tires. The races are usually several hours long. Formula One races are generally about two hours long and have fewer pit stops, so tire planning is crucial.

The cars used for NASCAR races are also visibly larger than the F1 cars. On the other hand, Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile recently announced plans for lighter and shorter vehicles by 2026 in F1 racing. The sports also determine their season winners differently. While NASCAR uses playoffs, the championship goes to the driver with the highest total scores throughout the F1 season.

Final Words

While certain American and European sports and games share a similar concept, they tend to differ in gameplay and rules. This variety contributes to the excitement of the sporting events, as each offers unique challenges and styles of play that appeal to diverse tastes and preferences.
