Recap of Jim Zorn’s XFL Press Conference

Former starting Quarterback and Ring Of Honor member of the Seattle Seahawks Jim Zorn was named Head Coach/GM of the XFL Seattle franchise. The conference took place at CenturyLink Fieldd. Home of the new XFL Seattle franchise, NFL Seahawks and the MLS Sounders FC.

Zorn is also a former coach in the National Football League. He was the quarterbacks coach for the Seahawks from 2001 until the 2007 season, before being hired by the Washington Redskins to be their head coach starting in the 2008 season. After being fired following the 2009 season, Zorn was hired as quarterbacks coach of the Baltimore Ravens. Zorn was released as quarterbacks coach of the Ravens on January 27, 2011, and then joined the Kansas City Chiefs as their quarterbacks coach for the 2011 season.

Notes from the Press Conference

  • Olive Luck reiterated the “Significant Capital” the XFL has. That was in response to recent reports of the AAF having money issues. Reassuring partners and fans that money wise, the XFL is fine.
  • Luck said Zorn was an innovative quarterback during his time with the expansion Seattle Seahawks
  • Luck said the community loves Zorn and was the only option for Head Coach/GM in Seattle.
  • Zorn joked about drafting Andrew Luck to the XFL
  • Only wants real names on the Jerseys, not like the past XFL
  • Excited about Vince McMahon’s vision of the league
  • Excited about the play clock
  • Wants to develop young players
  • Great opportunity for old and young coaches to be given a chance
  • Zorn joked that XFL Seattle already has eight season ticket holders, his family, which drew laughs from the crowd.
  • He was the third player ever to be signed by the Seahawks

Final Thoughts

The hire was perfect for the Seattle area. He gave a fun, up beat press conference. Different from the previous Bob Stoops and Pep Hamilton introductions. It remains to be seen how he will be as a Head Coach. His tenure as head coach of the Washington Redskins was short lived with no real opportunity after. The XFL can be a second chance for many players and coaches. It will be fun to watch how it all turns out.
