The XFL is renovating the way in which teams sign free agents during the season. Typically, a football team will workout players off the street, then decide whether or not to bring them under contract. This is fine in most cases, but the XFL wants to have an established pool of players who are continually training together.
The 25-second clock and other features of the XFL game require higher standards of conditioning to operate in a faster-paced game, and we’ve already heard players pointing out that their camps have been more intense than even some NFL and CFL workouts. 35-40 players, spanning all the positions on the field will train with Team Nine and stand ready to fill in any voids on a roster.
According to FootballScoop.com, heading up this unit is Bart Andrus. He’s been a coach at all levels of football, from college to the NFL, CFL, UFL, and even the NFL Europe. When Commissioner Oliver Luck was President of the NFL Europe, he got to know Andrus well, as he was the head coach of the Amsterdam Admirals. Under his direction, they won a World Bowl in 2005.
A former quarterback himself, he’s specialized as a QB’s coach in the past, and with the XFL’s focus on this position, his hiring is a no-brainer. We’ve yet to see who else he’ll bring in to round out his staff, but as soon as we find out, we’ll let you know.
The report goes on to drop an interesting news bit about how Team 9 will work during the season.
According to sources, players on Team 9 will move to active rosters by Week 6 (the XFL plays a 10-week regular season with two playoff rounds) and will then be replaced by new players on Team 9.
Bart Andrus will bring decades of experience leading teams to victory to team nine, whose roster will likely be announced later this week after we receive official word on XFL roster cuts.
