The San Fransisco 49ers have waived Seattle Dragons WR Austin Proehl. The move was made after the team signed veteran wide receiver Marqise Lee. Proehl signed a reserve/future contract on January 4th. QB Josh Johnson (Wildcats) and OL Corbin Kaufusi (BattleHawks) are still on the 49ers roster.
Proehl was selected in the Phase #5 portion of the 2020 XFL draft. He had 16 catches for 225 yards and was the first player to score a TD in the new XFL 2.0 era.
He is the son of former NFL WR Ricky Proehl, who had a 16-year NFL career. The Buffalo Bills drafted him in the 7th round of the 2018 NFL draft. He spent time with the Titans and Rams before coming to the XFL.
Proehl played his college ball at North Carolina where he caught 91 passes for 1,265 yards and five touchdowns.
