Early Career and XFL Stardom
Phillip “PJ” Walker, a native of Elizabeth, New Jersey, began his football journey at Temple University, where he played under head coach Matt Rhule. Walker was a standout player for the Owls, becoming the first quarterback in the school’s history to lead the team to back-to-back bowl appearances. After going undrafted in the 2017 NFL Draft, Walker signed with the Indianapolis Colts as a free agent, but his NFL career didn’t take off immediately. He spent two seasons on the Colts’ practice squad before joining the XFL.
In the XFL, Walker became the league’s breakout star as the quarterback for the Houston Roughnecks. In just five games, he threw for 1,338 yards and 15 touchdowns, leading the league in both categories. Walker’s impressive performance in the XFL caught the attention of NFL teams, including his former college coach Matt Rhule, who was then the head coach of the Carolina Panthers.
NFL Journey and Signing with the Bears
In March 2020, Walker signed with the Carolina Panthers, reuniting with Rhule. During his time with the Panthers, Walker showcased his athleticism and playmaking ability in limited action. With the Panthers looking to develop their quarterback depth chart under new coach Frank Reich, they released Walker. He quickly signed with the Chicago Bears
The addition of PJ Walker to the Bears’ roster provides the team with a promising backup option behind their starting quarterback Justin Fields. Walker’s mobility and strong arm make him a potential threat in both the passing and running game. His experience under Matt Rhule’s system and his XFL success demonstrate that he has the potential to excel when given the opportunity.
Implications for the Chicago Bears
The signing of PJ Walker offers the Chicago Bears depth and versatility at the quarterback position. With a young and talented roster, the Bears are looking to build a competitive team that can challenge for playoff spots in the coming years. The Bears recently traded the No. 1 overall pick to the Panthers for WR D.J. Moore, four draft picks. The Panthers are Walkers former team.
PJ’s signing not only provides the team with a solid backup option but also creates healthy competition at the backup quarterback position, which can only benefit the team’s overall performance.
The Chicago Bears’ decision to sign PJ Walker is a strategic move that could pay dividends down the road. With his unique skill set, proven success in high-pressure situations, and familiarity with a pro-style offense, Walker has the potential to make a significant impact on the Bears’ quarterback situation. As the team continues to build and develop, fans will be eager to see how Walker’s presence on the roster will contribute to the Bears’ future success.
