Former DC Defenders head coach/GM Pep Hamilton is set to interview with the Pittsburgh Steelers for their open Offensive Coordinator position. As quarterbacks coach for the Los Angeles Chargers, Hamilton’s status is unclear with head coach Anthony Lynn’s firing.
Brandon Staley officially signed on as the new Los Angeles Chargers head coach yesterday. Hamilton played a larger part in the success of QB Justin Herbert who is a candidate for NFL offensive rookie of the year. No word on if Staley will bring back Hamilton to coach the young QB.
There is also the question of if the new XFL ownership has reached out to the former Defenders coach. But if the league wants to bring him in again, they would need to do it soon. Also, Hamilton might not be interested due to the uncertainty of the XFL.
The Steelers were expected to promote Matt Canada to OC job to replace Randy Fichtner. However, the team is still looking at candidates, including Hue Jackson.
Hamilton served as the Colts’ OC from 2013-15 and had stops with the Jets, 49ers, Bears, and Browns. He was the University of Michigan’s assistant head coach/passing game coordinator under Jim Harbaugh before joining the XFL.
