USFL Draft Player Pool Will Not Be Released Before Draft

With the USFL draft just days away, on February 22nd at 7 pm ET. Fans want to know who is in the draft pool. On Friday, we already know the draft structure from a USFL draft press release.

“It will consist of 12 rounds and will distinctively proceed by position, beginning with quarterback (Round 1 Overall), followed by edge rusher/defensive end (Rounds 2-4), offensive tackle (Rounds 5-7), cornerback (Rounds 8-11), and back to quarterback (Round 12). Teams will have two minutes per selection on Day 1.”

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk says there won’t be a release of all the draft-eligible players by the USFL.

“The USFL won’t be disclosing the list of available players in advance of the draft. Thus, we won’t know who they are until their names are called next week.”

This being the league’s first draft, as much as we as fans would like to watch it unfold like the XFL, the people power behind the USFL, as they try to keep costs down, is much more limited than the XFL at this time.

Also, the first overall pick in the 2020 XFL draft Rashard Davis, WR from James Madison, never played a down with the DC Defenders or XFL. The USFL is trying to avoid this by having players sign a contract before the draft.

It would be embarrassing for the league to draft a player, then have that player get the call and say I’m not interested live on TV.

Unlike the XFL, where we knew the QB’s before the draft, the QB will be the first drafted in round one. Here is the draft order.

  1. Michigan Panthers
  2. Tampa Bay Bandits
  3. Philadelphia Stars
  4. New Jersey Generals
  5. Houston Gamblers
  6. Birmingham Stallions
  7. Pittsburgh Maulers
  8. New Orleans Breakers
