The Blitz was the Chicago squad in the original USFL with that logo.

    Mark:

Upset that the 1st year USFL is the EASTERN United States Football League. The League is playing in Birmingham with no games in the cities. You mean the League couldn’t represent any cities West of Texas???? I live Los Angeles & went to a number of Express games. I know it is the 1st year and looks like they may expand in year 2 —but come on!!!! I’m still upset. we shall see. Mike

The lightning bolt one sort of looks like the WFL Oakland Invaders (early 80s)

The Oakland Invaders had some badass unis. I don’t what it is about powder blue and gold, but it works. Must be to remind people in that market of the Chargers or Warriors or Bruins.

The hand with lightning are the Oakland Invaders … the star with three stripes is the Washington Federals … the Blitz is the Chicago Blitz … the star inside the black circle is the Denver Gold …

Just go to Chris Creamer’s SportsLogo site and look up all the USFL logos …

You’d think a reporter on the league would have done that.

Oakland Invaders were in the USFL, not the WFL of the 1970s. They weren’t that good until the Michigan Panthers merged with them in the final year. The 1985 USFL Championship between Oakland and Baltimore, was basically a rematch of the 1983 championship between Michigan and Philadelphia, the teams had just moved to new locations. The Michigan owner didn’t want to play in the fall so he sold to Oakland. Oakland folded after 1985 since they didn’t have the cash to keep going in the fall and attendance was under 20,000.

As much as I like the unique look of Oakland, I don’t know if that town cares about pro sports anymore. PayPal park in San Jose would be better, holds 18,000+ and is a nice new stadium. I’d just rename them the Bay Area Invaders. Sacramento might work too.
