In a momentous match at the fully packed Schauinsland-Reisen Arena in Duisburg, Rhein Fire triumphed over Stuttgart Surge with a commanding 53-34 win to claim the 2023 European League of Football championship.
Stuttgart Surge drew first blood in the game, only to watch Rhein Fire rally and establish a 21-6 lead with slightly under seven minutes remaining in the first half. However, the Surge made a valiant attempt to close the gap, coming within a point of their rivals. A crucial 34-yard field goal before halftime put the score at 24-20 in favor of Rhein Fire.
The second half proved difficult for Stuttgart as they struggled to keep up with the momentum generated by Coach Jim Tomsula’s team. A game-changing fumble from the Surge at their own four-yard line only exacerbated their woes. Capitalizing on the opportunity, Rhein Fire went on to find the end zone on three of their subsequent four drives. Despite a late-game interception by Hennessey, Nathaniel Robitaille’s second touchdown sealed the fate of the Surge and concluded an extraordinary campaign for the Fire.
The storybook season couldn’t have ended more perfectly for Rhein Fire, who set an unprecedented record by finishing the season unbeaten— a first in the history of NFL Europe and the ELF. With an awe-inspiring 393 yards and six touchdowns, Jadrian Clark was named the Championship Game MVP. All of this unfolded in front of an ecstatic crowd of 31,500, who witnessed the emergence of a new champion in European football.
