XFL 2020 Cities Review: St. Louis, Missouri

On January 25th, 2018, WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon’s Alpha Entertainment announced that The XFL will be returning in February 2020. As months went by, more information and details regarding the return of The XFL was revealed. It was revealed that there will be eight cities and stadiums that will be the home sites of the league. One of those cities is St. Louis, Missouri. The other cities are Dallas, Texas; Houston, Texas; Los Angeles, California; New York, Seattle, Washington DC; Tampa Bay, Florida & Washington D.C. The St. Louis XFL Franchise will be playing their games at The Dome at America’s Center.

The Dome at America’s Center was built for NFL’s St Louis Rams franchise. It was an addition to The Adjoining St. Louis Convention Center. Since the departure of The Rams, The Dome has continued to host a plethora of other events, enough that the stadium was unable to host a team in The Alliance Of American Football for The Current 2019 Season. The XFL is paying $800,000 in rent to use The Dome (a $300,000 flat fee plus $100,000 for each game) in exchange for keeping all of the revenue from ticket sales. The St. Louis Convention & Visitors Commission will be keeping the concession and the parking revenue. It is likely that for The XFL Games The Dome will have a reduced capacity, similar to The San Antonio Commanders use of The Alamodome. If the entire terrace level (upper bowl) is not used, then it would bring the stadium’s capacity down to around 38,000. The Dome is the only XFL venue with a roof. Along with CenturyLink Field, The Dome is the only XFL Venue in a downtown city center.

St. Louis is an independent city and a major inland port in The State of Missouri. It is situated along the Western Bank of the Mississippi River, which marks Missouri’s border with Illinois. The city has an estimated population of over 300,000. It is the cultural and economic center of the St. Louis Metropolitan Area, which as a whole includes nearly 3,000,000 people. It is the largest metropolitan area in Missouri, the second largest in Illinois (after Chicago) and the 22nd largest in The United States.

The economy of Metropolitan St. Louis relies on service, manufacturing, trade, transportation of goods and tourism. It’s metro area is home to major corporations including Anheuser-Busch, Express Scripts, Centene, Boeing Defense, Emerson, Energizer, Panera, Enterprise, Peabody Energy, Ameren, Post Holdings, Monsanto, Edward Jones, Go Jet, Purina & Sigma-Aldrich. Nine of the ten Fortune 500 companies that are based in Missouri are located within The St. Louis Metropolitan Area. The city is known for it’s growing medical, pharmaceutical & research presence due to institutions such as Washington University in St. Louis & Barnes-Jewish Hospital. One of the city’s iconic sights is The 630-foot (192 m) tall Gateway Arch in the downtown area.

St. Louis has two professional sports teams:
The St. Louis Cardinals Of Major League Baseball, who have won 11 World Series, which is second to The New York Yankees’ 27 championships.
The St. Louis Blues of the NFL, have appeared in three Stanley Cup finals from 1968 to 1970 and have made 25 consecutive playoff appearances.

St. Louis also has history in the world of soccer as they have contributed to at least one participant to each of The FIFA World Cup Mens team. The city of St. Louis is also the birthplace of corkball.

St. Louis has been the home to four NFL Franchises in the past. After The NFL was founded in 1920, the lague added The St. Louis All-Stars for The 1923 season. At that time, The St. Louis All-Stars played their games at Sportsman’s Park, which is a facility that hosted both the professional baseball teams in the city: The Cardinals & The Browns. The second football franchise was the independent professional football team St. Louis Gunners. They played the last three games of The 1934 NFL Season, replacing The Cincinnati Reds on the league schedule after The Reds’ membership was suspended. The team was headquartered at the National Guard Armory, which is where the nickname The Gunners came from.

The third team was The St. Louis Cardinals that played in St. Louis from 1960 to 1987 before moving to Phoenix Arizona. Originally the St. Louis, Cardinals were based in Chicago. The Chicago Cardinals played there from their founding in 1920 until their move to Missouri in 1959. The fourth franchise, which is arguably the most popular of the four, is The St. Louis Rams. The St. Louis Rams played in the city from 1995 to 2015. The Rams was founded in 1936 in Cleveland, Ohio. The Rams would win The Pre-Merger NFL Championship twice in 1945 & 1951. After playing in Los Angeles from 1946 to 1994, The Rams would move to St. Louis in 1995. The team would appear in 2 Super Bowls while based in St. Louis, defeating The Tennessee Titans 23–16 to win Super Bowl XXXIV in 1999 and losing 20–17 to The New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVI in 2001. The St. Louis Rams played their games at The Edward Jones Dome, which can seat up to 66,965 spectators.

On January 13th, 2016, it was announced that The NFL Owners voted 30–2 to allow The Rams’ ownership to move their team back to Los Angeles for The 2016 NFL Season. In December of 2018, it was announced that The XFL would be having a team from The St. Louis Area. The St. Louis XFL Team, which has yet to be named, will begin play in February 2020 and will be playing their home games at The Dome. The success that was reached by The St. Louis Rams as well as the other football teams in The St. Louis Area can really be used as a motivation and a driving factor when The St. Louis XFL Franchise hits the football field in February 2020.
