Philadelphia Has Registered A Domain Name For A Possible Future XFL Team

The XFL won’t be coming to The City Of Philadelphia for its 2020 season, but the city apparently wants a team in the future. Per Bob Williams & DomainNameWire.com, Philadelphia was one of 21 cities that filed a domain name for an XFL Team when the league begins its 2020 season. The XFL selected its eight cities as follows: New York, Dallas, Houston, St. Louis, Tampa Bay, Seattle, Washington D.C. & Los Angeles.

According to DomainNameWire.com, a website dedicated to website domain name news and investing, Philadelphia was on a shortlist of 21 cities that had domain names claimed with XFL naming conventions. They could be part of new XFL Team’s coming after the inaugrial season in 2020. According to the article, PhiladelphiaXFL.com, XFLPhiladelphia.com, and a shorter domain, perhaps XFLPhilly.com were all recently registered. A check of GoDaddy.com’s domain name availability confirms that all three domains are indeed taken.

So what does this mean?

Philadelphia could end up as one of the host cities of The XFL if the league should last more than the upcoming 2020 season. Philadelphia is one of the best sports cities in America and it is almost certain that Vince McMahon would love to bring his brand of football to The City of Brotherly Love. It certainly makes sense for The XFL to prepare beyond the eight cities they recently announced, as seen below, in case the league has success and wants to rapidly expand in the near future.

Where Would They Play

Lincoln Financial Field

If Philadelphia were to land an XFL Team in the future (should the league last more than one season), where would the team play? The city has options with Citizens Bank Park (which has never hosted a football game), Lincoln Financial Field (which The Philadelphia Eagles own and lease to Temple University for football) and Franklin Field (home to The Penn Relays & The University Of Pennsylvania Football Team).

How would the city embrace a team other than The Eagles if an XFL Team came into fruition? Philadelphia has had second football teams in the past from other leagues, namely The Philadelphia Stars of The USFL. The Stars were located in Philadelphia for two years and won The USFL Championship in 1984.

Philadelphia Stars

The Stars were coached by Jim Mora Sr. and featured stars such as Sam Mills & Sean Landeta. Former Kansas City Chiefs General Manager Carl Peterson served as The Team’s General Manager as The Stars won 41 of 54 regular-season games and were 7–1 in the postseason (won the championship after relocating to Baltimore in 1985).

The Stars played The 1983 season at Veterans Stadium and the 1984 Campaign at Franklin Field after a dispute with The Philadelphia Phillies. Philadelphia moved to Baltimore in 1985 after the league owners voted to move The USFL to the fall to compete with The NFL, which was spearheaded by New Jersey Generals Owner Donald Trump, knowing the team could never compete with The Eagles playing in the fall.

Could The XFL Work In Philly

A spring football league could be embraced by a Philadelphia fanbase that is starving for football when The Eagles aren’t playing. Fans don’t have to choose sides between The Eagles and an XFL team that plays from February to May, nor will have to suffer from over saturation. Another football team in the city can work if the league lasts and establishes a fan base. Philadelphia deserves a chance at The XFL if given the opportunity. But for now, we will have to see how the league does in 2020 and look for any more signs that a team could be coming our way.

“This is the future,” according to XFL Founder & WWE Chairman Vince McMahon’s mission statement. “This is not the past. This is the future. And the future moves fast. This is quicker, simpler. Rules, reformed. This is your game safer. This is football reborn. This is gaming and fantasy, this is padded roulette. Make a trade, make a team, make a move, make a bet. This is fans above all. This is maximum action. Less stall more ball. Fewer infractions. This begins in 2020. The future is near. More access. More everyone. More everything here. This is our moment, our story to tell. This is history begun. This is the XFL.”
