St Louis BattleHawks Kenny Robinson NFL Draft Eligible

In a trailblazing moment for the XFL, Kenny Robinson announced on Twitter today he has been added to the 2020 NFL Draft pool.

Robinson, formerly of West Virginia, had left school due to an academic code violation after his sophomore year in 2018. After briefly considering transferring, Robinson decided to instead try to make it to the NFL via the XFL after learning that the WVU decision might make regaining eligibility a challenge.

Robinson has been considered by many sources to be an NFL caliber talent, with many speculating that he will not have to wait long during the draft to hear his name called. At West Virginia, he showcased his physical play totaling 77 tackles, including 2 for loss to go with four interceptions and a fumble recovery as a sophomore. Coupled with three interceptions as a freshman, Robinson shows a nose for the ball and making plays.

In his preseason mock draft, Mike Renner had Robinson going in the first round to the Dallas Cowboys. Pro Football Focus also ranked Robinson highly as a coverage safety after he led the Big 12 in passer rating against. No small feat in a conference known for being pass-happy.

This is big news for the relaunched XFL. While not directly billed as a developmental league, it could offer an alternative path to the NFL for young men for whom college might not be the best fit. Allowing them an opportunity to earn a paycheck, showcase their skills and hone their talents to play in the fall could be a new role Oliver Luck did not envision at first. However, it could be an opportunity to expand the available talent pool and develop a strong fan base.
