XFL Star Receiver Cam Phillips Tries Out With Carolina Panthers

One of the biggest snubs this offseason has been the lack of attention directed at former Roughnecks WR Cam Phillips. He was the XFL’s leading receiver with 31 catches for 455 yards and 9 touchdowns in just 5 games. That’s about an average of 6 receptions, 91 yards and 2 TD’s each week. Absolutely monstrous production, but he’s been waiting for an NFL call for months.

He reportedly received interest from the Dolphins and Bengals back in March, but nothing ever materialized. Now, his former XFL QB PJ Walker has likely vouched for him, as Phillips is working out for the Carolina Panthers.

Walker was HC Matt Rhule’s star player back in their college days at Temple, and the first-year coach is making a great move, bringing in PJ’s favorite target to compete.

To describe PJ Walker and Cam Phillip’s connection as uncanny would be a vast disservice to both of them. They are simply next level when they get together on the field, and just seem to always be on the same page.

Now, Cam Phillips finally has a shot to prove himself in the NFL. He previously played with the Buffalo Bills, but his Roughnecks exploits have thrown his name into contention. In Carolina, he’d have to fight for targets behind DJ Moore, Robby Anderson, and Curtis Samuel just as PJ is gunning for the QB spot behind Teddy Bridgewater, but he’d be an excellent addition to their WR room.

After watching Phillips play five games for the Houston Roughnecks of the XFL I found it difficult to understand why more NFL teams did not show more interest in him. I can only assume if you go undrafted out of college teams may be reluctant to show much interest in you as a FA because if you end up making the team and becoming a player the guy signing the paychecks may wonder how his scouting department missed on him the first time!
