XFL, Other Sports Leagues Monitoring Coronavirus – COVID-19

As news of Coronavirus(COVID-19) spreads around the country, there are concerns that the virus could impact the spring sports world. Per Yahoo Sports, some international sports leagues have already been subject to cancellations and postponements, while American leagues like the NBA are leaving it up to fans to decide whether or not to attend games.

The XFL made the following statement to Pro Football Talk on the subject.

“The health and safety of the entire XFL family is of the utmost importance,” the XFL told PFT via email on Wednesday. “We have established a COVID-19 task force and are closely monitoring this public health issue. We are in regular contact with our Medical Advisory Board, as well as health and public safety officials on a national and local basis. Additionally, we have connected with other professional sports leagues to share information and best practices. Consideration of this input, a fact-based perspective, and our priority for safety will guide our decisions going forward.”

With the XFL’s steady attendance record, we’re left wondering how the handful of cases in the US will affect the rest of the season. With thousands of fans pouring into stadiums to support their teams, there are things that can be done to keep the virus from spreading.

The obvious one is to watch from home if you’re experiencing any symptoms like fever, cough or shortness of breath. Education is the most important part of preventing this illness, and the Center for Disease Control has information available about COVID-19 at cdc.gov.

We all want to be in the stands supporting our teams, but out of respect for our fellow fans, the employees at the stadium and everyone on the field, the best thing to do is stay cozy at home. Throw some wings in the oven, sub the beer for some chicken noodle soup and get well.

If you’re not experiencing any symptoms, there are some easy things you can do to make sure you stay healthy at the games. Washing your hands often, not sharing drinks and giving people space are the three best ways to keep the virus from spreading, and those of us who will be out there can still have a great time without limiting our experience in the stands.

We’re all doing this for the love of football, but for the love of ourselves and our neighbors, let’s make sure to take extra precautions as we wait for the virus to pass.
