XFL 2023 Supplemental Draft Recap: Arlington Renegades Draft Highlights Include De’Veon Smith, Donald Payne

With the Arlington Renegades looking to finalize their roster heading into training camp, the team added more players through the supplemental draft.

The XFL Supplemental Draft was a one-day event that took place on New Year’s Day that consisted of 17 rounds with a total of 90 players being selected. Arlington started with the third overall pick of the draft. They finished with 13 of the 17 rounds with draft picks. Two of the players drafted went to Texas universities with an additional two being natives of the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

OL Teton Saltes, New Mexico (Round 1, Pick 3)

Teton Saltes found success in college at New Mexico as a right tackle for the team where he was an honorable mention for All-Mountain West in 2019 and third-team All-Mountain West in 2020. Saltes went undrafted and played for the New York Jets for a short time during training camp last season. He was most recently with the Michigan Panthers of the USFL.

SAF Jamal Carter, Miami (Round 2, Pick 14)

While playing at the University of Miami, Jamal Carter recorded 165 tackles, two interceptions and ten pass deflections in 50 games played. Despite Carter going undrafted, he was signed by the Denver Broncos and would play for the team for two seasons from 2017 to 2018. He would go on to have stops in Tennessee, Arizona, and Atlanta from 2019 to 2022. Carter has recorded 11 tackles and one pass deflection in his NFL career.

LB Donald Payne, Stetson (Round 3, Pick 19)

Donald Payne reunites with his former Houston Gamblers and current Renegades defensive coordinator Tim Lewis. Payne was a top-flight linebacker at Stetson recording 538 career tackles, which is the 3rd most in Division 1 history, 14 sacks, and nine interceptions. He would play for five different NFL teams in his five NFL seasons recording 76 tackles, two fumble recoveries, one sack, and one pass deflection.

Payne made his presence known this year in the USFL leading the league in tackles with 117 in ten games. He also added three interceptions and two sacks to his stat line. The USFL named him to their All-USFL Defense for his play during the season.

OL George Moore, Oregon (Round 4, Pick 30)

George Moore proved to be a versatile offensive lineman as he showed scouts at Oregon that he can play multiple positions on the line. Moore started 20 games in his last two seasons at Oregon playing left tackle, left guard, and right guard in his college career. His most recent stop was in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys this season.

OLB Aaron Adeoye, Southeast Missouri State (Round 5, Pick 35)

Aaron Adeoye is no stranger to spring football starting his professional football career with the Champions Indoor Football league in 2017. Adeoye would join Tim Lewis’ Birmingham Iron of the AAF in 2019 before the league folded eight games into the season. He would go on to play for the Ravens, Packers, and Jets in the NFL from 2019 to 2021. His most recent stop was with the Birmingham Stallions of the USFL this year before being put on IR for a chest injury.

DL Tomasi Laulile, BYU (Round 6, Pick 46)

Tomasi Laulile makes his return to the XFL and to the Renegades after playing for Renegades head coach Bob Stoops in 2020. During Laulile’s three seasons at BYU, he recorded 47 tackles, ten tackles for loss, five sacks, and one interception. Laulile played for the Colts and Saints in 2018 and 2019 after going undrafted. He recorded two tackles with the Renegades in five games in 2020. Most recently, he found success with the Houston Gamblers of the USFL recording 20 tackles, a half sack, and a fumble recovery for a touchdown. The 49ers signed him after the USFL season ended for a short trip in training camp.

OL Maea Teuhema, Southeastern Louisiana (Round 7, Pick 51)

Another former Renegade returns to the team for his second stint on the team. Maea Teuhema started his professional career with the San Antonio Commanders of the AAF in 2019. Shortly after being drafted by the Renegades, Teuhema was waived and picked up by the New York Guardians where he would bounce back and forth between Team Nine and the Guardians. His most recent stop was with the Michigan Panthers of the USFL this past season.

RB De’Veon Smith, Michigan (Round 8, Pick 59)

Spring football fans know De’Veon Smith well as he has been considered to be one of the best running backs in recent memory in spring football. After stops with the Dolphins and Washington in the NFL, he joined the Orlando Apollos of the AAF where he found success as one of the leading rushers of the league. He recorded 345 rushing yards and six touchdowns in the shortened eight-game season.

While he didn’t score a rushing touchdown with the Tampa Bay Vipers in 2020, he led the XFL with 365 yards on the ground in five games. His most recent stops were in the CFL with the BC Lions and the Pittsburgh Maulers of the USFL where he was released after allegedly violating multiple team rules.

CB Darren Evans, LSU (Round 9, Pick 64)

Darren Evans played part of his college career at Nichols State as well as LSU. At Nichols State, Evans was fifth in the FCS with 15 pass breakups in 2019. While playing for LSU, he had 33 tackles and seven pass breakups in 22 games for the Tigers. Evans would go undrafted in this year’s NFL Draft but found a home with the New York Giants.

WR Tyler Vaughns, USC (Round 10, Pick 69)

Tyler Vaughns found consistent success with the USC Trojans having an impact from 2017 until 2020. In four seasons, Vaughns caught 222 passes for 2,801 yards and 20 touchdowns. He went undrafted in the 2021 NFL Draft where he signed with the Colts before being cut prior to the 2021 NFL season. His most recent stop was with the Pittsburgh Steelers this preseason which included him catching a game-winning touchdown against the Seattle Seahawks.

LB Colin Schooler, Texas Tech (Round 11, Pick 74)

Colin Schooler had a long, successful college football career that spanned over five years. Schooler played his first three seasons with the Arizona Wildcats before transferring to Texas Tech. He finished his college career with 482 tackles, 58.5 tackles for loss, 14.5 sacks, 13 pass deflections, eight forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, and five interceptions. Schooler would go undrafted in this year’s NFL Draft but did land a spot with the Buffalo Bills for a short time. He has been training with the NFL Alumni Academy in Arlington, Texas recently.

CB Debione Renfro, Texas A&M (Round 12, Pick 79)

Debione Renfro was a solid shutdown corner in college for Texas A&M playing three seasons with the school. During those years, Renfro recorded 124 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, 14 pass deflections, four forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. After college, he played in the CFL for two different teams before signing with the Massachusetts Pirates of the IFL this past summer. He is also a member of the NFL Alumni Academy where he has been training in Arlington, Texas with them.

WR Quintin Vinzant, CETYS-Mexico (Round 13, Pick 84)

Quintin Vinzant played his high school football in Richardson, Texas before heading off to college. Vinzant played his college ball in Mexico for Cetys University in Tijuana where he also excelled in track and field there. His 4.37 40-yard dash at his pro day is what caught the attention of some scouts. Back in 2020, he signed with the arena football team Green Bay Blizzard. Most recently, he has been with the NFL Alumni Academy training with them to prepare to play either in the NFL or the XFL.
