Ex-Guardian Dravon Askew-Henry Gaining Attention with Giants

The Big Apple appears to be the perfect spot for Dravon Askew-Henry to succeed in.

Reports out of New York Giants training camp has been former New York Guardians defensive back Dravon Askew-Henry has been impressing in camp. Late last week, Askew-Henry made two big pass deflections that caught the attention of many.

The New York Giants website named him as an honorable standout in camp last week. NJ Advance Media’s Matt Lombardo reported that Askew-Henry was punished earlier in the day for a mistake made at practice. After naming him as one of his sleepers at camp, Lombardo said he responded well from the punishment.

Askew-Henry jumped the route along the sideline and swatted an Alex Tanney pass intended for wide receiver Tony Brown to the ground. Two plays later, Tanney tried to fit the ball into a tight window to Brown, and Askew-Henry swatted that away, too.

Given the Giants’ lack of quality depth at cornerback, there is an opportunity for Askew-Henry to push for a roster spot and playing time.

This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise as Askew-Henry performed well with the Guardians last season. In five games, he recorded 11 total tackles and six pass deflections. His best performance came in the last game against the Dallas Renegades where he recorded five pass deflections.

While he didn’t record an interception, Askew-Henry was considered one of the top shutdown defensive backs in the league. Receivers had a tough time handling him in one-on-one coverage. Askew-Henry and Jamar Summers was apart of one of the best secondaries in the XFL.

Why Dravon Askew-Henry Will Make Giants Roster

One of the Giants’ projected starting corners Deandre Baker was arrested back in May under charges of armed robbery and aggravated assault with a firearm. Baker was charged with four counts of robbery with a firearm and could face ten years in jail.

This is important as it appears that Baker won’t be a factor this season. James Bradberry is projected to be the number one guy and Darnay Holmes appears to be in the running. Askew-Henry has the advantage over Holmes in terms of size as he’s taller than Holmes. It’s unlikely Ashew-Henry will be a number one corner, but he fits the role of an outside corner.

XFL fans know how good Askew-Henry played with the Guardians. New York had one of the best pass defenses in the XFL in part due to Askew-Henry’s play. The Giants need help at corner and he could provide them with what they need. It’s a loss for the XFL, but a gain for the NFL.
