Birmingham Council President Wants XFL Team In Alabama

The Birmingham Iron was the last professional football team based in Birmingham, Alabama. It was one of the eight members of the Alliance of American Football (AAF). Now that the XFL has new ownership, the city wants to land its own XFL franchise.

William Parker the Birmingham City Council President, wants a meeting with the new XFL ownership group to discuss bringing a franchise to Birmingham. The idea would be to play at Legion Field, which can seat 70,000 fans.

“Over the years, we’ve worked hard to position Birmingham as a sports destination,” President Parker said. “By having the XFL at Legion Field, we’d be able to keep major sporting events at the historic stadium year round since the league plays in the spring. I will be reaching out to the leadership at the XFL to schedule meetings in which we can discuss the ways that both the league and Birmingham can mutually benefit from this exciting new venture.”

If anything this shows the interest and value to local cities of the XFL. Could Birmingham be a possible home for an XFL franchise, maybe? But not for the 2021 season. XFL co-owner Dany Garcia has said there is a possibility of expansion in the future.

Not gonna happen. Legion is too big….maybe the new 40,000 Protective Stadium that UAB is building. Birmingham would have to guarantee 25,000 at Legion and that’s still sparse even if they tarp it wouldn’t look right. I wouldn’t do it.
