The Spring League’s Generals Win the 2020 Championship

Bryan Scott led the Generals to the 2020 championship on Tuesday night. It was a great way to wrap up a season that had both great highs, and not-so-great lows for The Spring League.

The already short regular season was cut even shorter due to COVID-19, as Week 4, and part of Week 3 were canceled.

The venue was changed, the teams chosen, and the stage was set to put a bow on the fall session.

While the majority of the rosters were original Generals and Aviators players, there were some guys who filled in spots.

Most of which came from the Conquerors:

  • K/P Matt Mengel
  • LB Royce See
  • TE Dimitrios Tsesmetzis
  • RB Sola Olateju
  • RB Jordan Salima

For the Aviators, there was also a change at QB. The injured McLeod Bethel-Thompson didn’t make the trip, leaving George Bowen to lead the offense.

It was a slow start for both teams, as they struggled to get a rhythm offensively. Even so, Scott was able to get the Generals on the board first with a tipped ball finding its way to Melvin Vaughn.

An interception returned for a TD by former Seattle Dragons Channing Stribling of the Generals was the only other score in the first half, giving their squad a 14-0 lead at the break. He would end the night with 2 INTs, a total of 4 on the season.

Mengel started the second half scoring off with a TSL record-setting 55-yard bomb putting his team up 17-0.

But the Aviators would not be quiet long. After struggling to get the run game going in the first half, the combo of Salima and Olateju helped get them set up for a big play.

Bowen hit La’Michael Pettway for a 48-yard catch-and-run, on a drive that ended with Bowen getting in the endzone for the TD.

In the end it was the trio of Scott, WR Jordan Suell, and TE Sal Cannella who stole the show. Right after halftime, Scott and Suell connected on a beautiful 38-yard strike to give the Generals a 24-8.

It never as close again.

The Aviators did score another TD after QB Delvin Isadore came in late and hit on a dime to Mathew Sexton, putting the ball on the 2. Olateju would take it in from there.

Generals QB Bryan Scott

Bryan Scott ended up going 22/32, 264yds, and 3 TDs passing, 25 yards and a TD on the ground on his way to his 2nd TSL MVP, and becoming the only QB to throw for 1000 in a TSL season.

Suell ended with 100 yards on 4 catches and 1 TD. RB Darnell Holland had some monster runs, and ended with 51 yards on 5 carries.

We’ll be hearing from CEO Brian Woods soon to get his feelings on the season, and some news about next year, as well as some of the players who were on the field last night.

Congratulations, Generals, on your 2020 The Spring League Championship.
