The Spring League’s MVP Bryan Scott Talks Playing In TSL

Two-time Spring League MVP Bryan Scott is a QB that knows how to lead. Whether it’s practice, a game, or a phone call, Scott knows how to gain trust from guys quickly, and even better, he shows you why he deserves it.

A southern California guy, Scott attended Occidental College, a DIII school in Los Angeles. He was named to the All-Conference team in each year, and later become team MVP, setting records for yards and passing TDS.

Scott has also played in the World Championships for U-19, leading Team USA to the Gold in 2014, and winning the MVP there too.

After graduating, he bounced between NFL (LA Rams, KC Chiefs, Atlanta Falcons) and CFL (Edmonton Eskimos) camps. He signed a futures deal with the Eskimos for 2020 before opting-out after the season was canceled.

The one that has stuck though, is The Spring League. Scott has been there twice, so to see him succeed like he did this fall was no surprise. What was surprising though, was how quickly his team seemed to mesh.

I had spoken to the C/G for the Generals, Sean Brown, and he talked about how quickly the two built a rapport. Relationships are the key to building a successful team, and Scott made sure the whole squad knew he had their back.

Most of the practices this fall were joint sessions. The Generals practiced with the Alphas, so unlike most teams, the offense spent little time with the defense.

Because Bryan knows what it takes to be a champion, he made sure to show support to his defensive guys.

“I had been in that situation before, where you don’t even really know any of the guys on your team on the other side of ball, you’re practicing against another team. I wanna know who my right corner is as a person. I wanna know his name. I’d go up to the defense after practice and ask how did you guys do, who’s a baller…I wanted to win that thing from the second I stepped onto the field.”

This season was different than any other in the league. FS1 jumped on to televise the games, COVID-19 made things more difficult than they needed to be, and that led to the break between the final week and the championship game.

The Generals came out firing though, and in the end, Scott was a big part of that. They finished the season 4-0, taking the championship trophy, and Bryan, the MVP.

Week 4 had been canceled due to concerns with the virus, and it was almost a month between the Week 3 game and the championship, but if you watched that game from Orlando you barely noticed.

Both teams had to find some help to fill roster spots,

Scott says he tried to make sure every person on that team felt like they were part of something big. And it was important to him that every guy who had played that year made it back to the championship game.

“I want our offense and our defense to realize this is a team, and we wanna WIN!”

It ended up being the difference for the Generals. They won it all, and it wasn’t hard to tell who was the better team all season.

He is indeed a General. You can see it in the way he approaches the game, how seriously he takes the small things, and in the relationships he builds.

Zach Mettenberger was on the sidelines with him throughout the year, and although he never saw the field, Bryan said he was an integral part of his improvement.

“Anyone that has NFL starting QB experience is another set of eyes I trust. He did a really good job at explaining things that I can’t see from that perspective.”

It was the strong bonds that led this team to The Spring League championship, and at the center of that was QB Bryan Scott. The focus on winning, bringing his experience to the team, and making sure they were a tight unit all breeds success.

He has some optimism for the future, we didn’t get into it because it’s early in the process, but in 2018 his performance got him a workout with the Chiefs. And to come back and be able to show what he can do not only as a football player but as a General, the sky is the limit.

The plan is the NFL. But I wouldn’t be mad at it if he showed up in the XFL in 2022. He has a lot of the great traits you want in a QB. And there’s no doubt that he can lead a team.

Here’s hoping the Spring League continues to build and give players and coaches an opportunity to show what they have to compete and contribute at the next level
